Mission Statement
Purpose
The purpose of the Office of Continuing Medical Education and Professional Development (OCMEPD) at the University of Nevada School of Medicine (UNSOM) is to advance healthcare professionals along their lifelong learning continuum by providing high quality professional development opportunities that will enhance their ability to provide excellent patient care.
Content Areas
Activities produced by the OCMEPD will address content areas which are based on the identified educational gaps of healthcare providers, with a focus on the following areas:
- Clinical diagnosis and management of disease and disorders
- Updates on the latest research and techniques
- Topics affecting the practice of medicine and health care delivery systems (i.e. ethical, socioeconomic, political and legislative issues)
Target Audience
The OCMEPD seeks to support the interdisciplinary practice of medicine by providing educational opportunities for healthcare providers including physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, pharmacists, dietitians, psychologists and other healthcare providers as determined by the specific identified needs related to each activity. We also provide educational opportunities for students and residents in order to enhance and augment their learning experiences. We seek to address the needs of learners within the state of Nevada as well as nationally and internationally.
Types of Activities
The OCMEPD offers a wide array of educational formats including live conferences and workshops, distance learning, enduring materials and regularly scheduled courses (grand rounds and case conferences). Educational methodologies are selected according to learner’s needs based on their identified educational gaps. The OCMEPD program produces directly sponsored activities and jointly-sponsored activities with organizations whose mission and goals are congruent with our own.
Expected Results
We expect that as a result of participating in our CME activities that learners will be able to deliver improved patient care by applying new knowledge and skills that will enhance their competence and/or improve their performance in practice.
