Message from the Chair

The University of Nevada School of Medicine is a statewide school with campuses located in Reno and Las Vegas. The school supports two independent residencies in Internal Medicine, one in Reno at the eastern edge of the Sierra Nevada mountains and one in Las Vegas. In Reno we are fortunate to have the Renown Regional Medical Center as our community hospital and the VA Sierra Nevada Healthcare System as our second teaching affiliate. These affiliations allow for a diverse training experience with exceptional clinical experiences from both community and VA subspecialties in Internal Medicine as well as other specialties. Our outstanding full-time faculty provide a strong core for the educational support of the residents and medical students with the community expanding the educational experiences to allow the resident to excel as either a primary care physician, ambulatory or hospitalist; or as a strong foundation for fellowship training. The department continues to enhance and promote research opportunities for those physicians intending to pursue an academic career.

The faculty to resident ratio and the smaller size of the residency allows for residents to have “hands on” training experiences and easy access to the faculty, the associate program directors, the program director and the chair. I have spent my entire career involved in resident and medical student education both as a community clinical faculty member, then as a member of the full-time faculty, and ultimately as department chair. I continue to enjoy the clinical practice of general internal medicine and see patients on a regular weekly schedule at my clinical office. The department values education as its core mission and has a stable foundation of highly motivated faculty, several with over 20 years of service to the community and medical school, committed to educational excellence.
