Clinical Care
The clinical aspect of our Geriatric Medicine Fellowship program fulfills all aspects of the ACGME national accreditation guidelines. Settings include the Veterans Administration (VA) medical center; the University Health System clinics, Renown Regional Medical Center. The experiences are integrated to provide comprehensive training that encompasses rehabilitation, long-term care, hospice care, home care, neurology, psychiatry, other relevant subspecialties, and out patient medicine.
In addition to their continuity and consult experiences, fellows can choose to rotate through a variety of specialty clinics relevant to the practice of geriatrics. Clinics available include Gynecology, movement disorders, Rheumatology, Endocrinology, Cardiology, Pulmonology, among others.
The longitudinal clinical experiences include the Community Living Center, but is also enriched by Home Based Primary Care and a Geriatric Psychiatry clinic at the VA. The Geriatric Psychiatry clinic allows the fellows collaborative care along side a PGY 4 psychiatry resident. The fellows may customize their experiences to include longitudinal subspecialty clinics in their interested areas, such as geriatric oncology. Dr. Neila Shumaker, the VA Geriatric Section Chief (ACOS), supervises the longitudinal CLC and HBPC rotation. Dr. Susan Drymalski, Psychiatry faculty supervises the Geriatric Psychiatry clinic.
