VISITING STUDENTS

Welcome to the webpage for visiting students. We offer many exciting elective

opportunities and we look forward to working with you.

Please note that third year clerkship rotations are available only to University of Nevada School of

Medicine (UNSOM) students. Because our required clerkship rotations depend heavily on the specific educational curriculum during the first two years, we cannot in fairness carry out the detailed curriculum comparison required to ensure all students enter with the same knowledge base. For more information please click here.

Our elective course catalog is available at http://www.unr.edu/med/dept/ome/electives.asp.

Please note that there are a few electives not available to visiting students; these are clearly identified as such in the catalog. Changes in elective course may occur after catalog publication.

For the most current information on electives in Las Vegas contact Sherry Marcu at 702-671-2302 and for questions regarding Reno electives contact Debbie Chase at 775-682-7729.

Visiting students may be accepted for up to eight weeks of fourth year electives.

Applications for fourth year elective rotations will only be accepted from medical students in good standing who have completed their first three years at an LCME accredited medical school or an AOA accredited osteopathic school in the U.S. or Canada. Applications will be accepted by the Office of Medical Education after May 15 after UNSOM student requests are filled.

To be considered for elective rotations, visiting students must provide the following documentation:

-proof of completion of core clerkship rotations comparable to our own students, including:

6 weeks Psychiatry

6 weeks Obstetrics and Gynecology

6 weeks Pediatrics

6 weeks Family Medicine

12 weeks Internal Medicine

12 weeks Surgery

-proof of malpractice coverage ($1,000,000/$3,000,000)

-copy of medical school transcripts

-USMLE step 1 scores or COMLEX step 1 scores

-current immunization records

-documentation of background check (checks previously submitted for admission to medical school are acceptable)

The University of Nevada School of Medicine does not provide professional liability insurance coverage on visiting students. Therefore, all students that are accepted are required to have professional liability insurance coverage from their own medical school; or they must obtain an individual policy. The Office of Medical Education requires proof of such coverage with the application.

No student stipends are available. The University of Nevada School of Medicine will give no credit to visiting students. Evaluation of the student's performance will be made using the evaluation form provided by the visiting student's medical school. This will be forwarded to the student's medical school upon completion of the elective.

The application for elective rotations as a visiting student can be obtained at http://www.unr.edu/med/dept/OME/electives/InstructionsVisitingStudents.htm.

Visiting student applications will be processed after May 15. A $100.00 non-refundable application fee is required at the time of application. Please do not send cash. Make checks or money orders payable to the “Board of Regents”. After receiving a completed application and the application fee, the Office of Medical Education will notify the student regarding the status of the application. A lead time of at least two months is required.

Arrangements for housing and meals must be made by the student. However, information may be obtained through the off campus housing web site at www.reslife.unr.edu/och for students coming to Reno. For students coming to LasVegas, please check the Student Affairs web site at

http://www.medicine.nevada.edu/dept/asa/students/VisitingStude_MMtmp1bdf3c64/VisitingStudentHousing-LasVegas.htm or call the Office of Medical Education office in Las Vegas at 702-671-2302.

In order to maintain a quality learning environment, the number of visiting students accepted into any elective rotation will be determined by the University of Nevada School of Medicine in its sole discretion.
