Q. What is the procedure for body donation?

Fill out and have notarized two copies of the Anatomical Will form provided by the Anatomical Donation Program at the University of Nevada School of Medicine.

Sign the Donor Card provided by the program and carry it with you in case of accidental death.

Inform your family, attorney, and family physician of your plans.
Q. What is the procedure at time of death?
At the time of death, the family physician, hospital or nursing home should call the telephone number on the Donor Card. If the body is accepted, arrangements will be made for transportation of the remains by the funeral home to the university.
The procedure of use by the School of Medicine is usually completed within two years, but may be longer, for example, up to five years or more. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that you let relatives and friends know these facts so that they do not become concerned.
Annual Memorial Service
The University of Nevada School of Medicine holds an annual memorial service conducted by the first year medical students. The medical students send out formal invitations to the relatives and friends of the deceased. This service is held at a local funeral home in May of each year. Family and friends of all donors are invited to share memories and help with the healing process.
Q. Who will obtain the Death Certificate?
The funeral home will obtain a Death Certificate within 24 hours of expiration of a donor.
Q. What happens to a donor’s body after acceptance into the program?
Following the study of the body, the remains are cremated. It is possible for ashes to be returned to the donor’s family by a written request indicated on the Anatomical Will.
Q. Are there conditions attached to body donation?
Yes! It should be understood that according to the Uniform Anatomical Gift Act, completion of these documents does not guarantee that the University of Nevada School of Medicine will accept an anatomical donation. As such, alternative funeral arrangements should be considered and discussed with relatives.
Q. Can I terminate this contract with the University?
Yes! A donor may nullify the signed documents by requesting cancellation in writing to Joyce King at the address below stating that they are revoking their bequest.
Q. Can I donate someone else’s body: e.g. my spouse’s?
Yes, when a husband or wife dies, the surviving spouse can donate the body.
