UNSOM Prospective Applicants: Applicants: Current Applicants
Welcome to the admissions process at University of Nevada School of Medicine.
The next several months will be a time of excitement and some anxiety as you take the steps to achieve your goal of becoming a physician. The School of Medicine has resources and programs available for applicants to make the process as easy as possible.
- Admissions Staff: The admissions staff at UNSOM is available to answer your questions throughout the process.
- Peer Contacts: Each applicant selected for an interview is assigned a Peer Contact, a first year medical student. The Peer Contact is available by phone, email and in person to answer questions you have as you move through the process.
- Destination UNSOM: The School of Medicine offers all interviewed applicants the opportunity to learn more about the School of Medicine during this two to three hour program, on both the Reno and Las Vegas campuses.
Admissions Process Steps:
Step 1 - Documents: All applicants to UNSOM participate in the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS). Once AMCAS verifies and processes a student's application, this information is provided to UNSOM. UNSOM proceeds to verify residency status and qualified students are sent an electronic secondary application to fill out.

Step 2- Secondary Applications: This information is unique to UNSOM and gives our admissions committee more specific information on applicants. Secondary applications are only provided to applicants who have met UNSOM's interview criteria. All secondary applicants are due no later than December 1, along with a fee of $45. Applicants are encouraged to return secondaries as quickly as possible. The sooner an applicant returns this information, the more quickly he or she will be scheduled for an interview.
Step 3 - Interviews: Applicants to UNSOM receive 2 interviews, on either the Reno or Las Vegas campuses. Each applicant is interviewed by a admissions committee member and a second, third, or fourth year medical student. Each interview is weighed equally in the admissions process. UNSOM interviews are "blinded." Interviewers have not reviewed applicant AMCAS or secondary applications.
Step 4 - Instate applicants: Proof of residency must be submitted. Applicants will be provided with the paperwork and submission requirements as part of the secondary application packet.
Step 5 - Admissions Committee Review: The applicant's part is now complete. Admissions Committee members begin the thorough review of each applicant in preparation for a series of four meetings, January through April.
Step 6 - Admissions Notification: Each applicant will receive written notification of the decision by the Admissions Committtee. All letters go out the 15th of each month, January through April. No news is good news! The committee can't review each applicant at each meeting, so there is a rolling admissions process through those four months.
