UNSOM Prospective Applicants: Admissions Information: Out-of-State Admissions Criteria
Students from the western states without medical schools (Idaho, Alaska, Montana, Wyoming) and students from the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada mountains (Truckee, Susanville, Bishop) are eligible to apply as out of state applicants. Out of state candidates are evaluated on the basis of academic performance; results of the MCAT; the nature and depth of scholarly, extracurricular, and health care related activities during college years (excellence and balance of the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities); academic letters of evaluation; and the personal interview. Interviews are held in Reno. Individuals who do not meet these residential requirements should not apply.
Currently 5 spaces in the class are open to out of state applicants. That number will increase slightly as class sizes increase. The average GPA of admitted students is 3.6 and the average MCAT is 9.6.
The Admissions Selection Committee encourages applicants of both genders and from all socioeconomic, racial, age groups, religious, and educational backgrounds. The School of Medicine is committed to the recruitment, selection, and retention of underrepresented minorities. Residents of the state of Nevada and individuals who meet the nonresident criteria who are from minority and disadvantaged backgrounds are encouraged to apply. A limited number of scholarships are available for underrepresented minority students. Out-of-state students are also eligible for needs-based scholarships.
Tuition Averaging
Out of state students are eligible for this program, designed to lesson the financial burden of attending medical school. Students pay OOS tuition in Year I of medical school, but this is averaged over the four years of attendance. The subsequent three years are at the in-state tuition rate. For more information on financial planning and the cost of attendance, see information here.
