Changing the Face of Medicine
February 15 - March 26, 2009
"Changing the Face of Medicine: Celebrating America's Women Physicians," a traveling exhibit on women doctors that visited the Northwest Reno Library earlier this year, told the extraordinary story of the struggles faced by American women who wanted to practice medicine over the past two centuries. More than 255 people attended a five-week speaker series and opening reception. Countless others viewed the exhibit while it was at the library.
"Changing the Face of Medicine" describes the quest of women to become doctors and introduces audiences to outstanding physicians from across the United States. Women physicians are now found in every branch of medicine. They are researchers on the cutting edge of new medical discoveries, educators, surgeons, family practitioners, specialists and government medical officials. Interactive kiosks traveling with the exhibition provided educational activities, information about medical careers and biographies of outstanding women physicians.
The National Library of Medicine and the American Library Association organized the traveling exhibition with support from the National Institutes of Health Office of Research on Women's Health and the American Medical Women's Association. The exhibition’s Reno appearance was a collaborative effort among the Washoe County Library System, University of Nevada School of Medicine and Savitt Medical Library.
