UNSOM Prospective Applicants: Undergraduates: Physician Shadow Program
Shadowing a physician can be an important experience for students planning to apply to medical school. Shadowing should not be the primary clinical experience for applicants, however. Students should obtain additional clinical experiences, through volunteering, in addition to shadowing. The School of Medicine offers undergraduate students limited opportunities to shadow a faculty physician in Reno or Las Vegas.
Reno Campus Physician Shadow Program
- Spring Semester: Three-month (February-April) shadowing opportunities available for up to 12 students
- Applicants must be at minimum a UNR sophomore
- Minimum overall GPA required: 3.2
- Applications are available beginning November 4
- Fully completed applications must be submitted no later than November 25 to be considered for an interview
- Students must submit Two-Step TB Test results from within the past 12 months. Two-Step TB tests are available from the Student Health Center.
Reno Online Application
Las Vegas Campus Physician Shadow Program
- Fall Semester: Shadowing available for up to 20 students
- Applications accepted beginning August 30 and ending September 30, as long as space is available.
- Spring Semester: UNLV AED members only (see organization officers for more information). Download AED information for Spring 2010
- Minimum GPA required: 3.2
- Application is required
- Students must have a current PPD (tuberculosis skin test) within the past 12 months submitted with application. Available from the Student Health Center .
This program is designed for students serious about applying to medical school. Applicants to the program must be currently enrolled students at a university. Students are matched with a physician in one of several specialty choices for one-half to a full-day of shadowing. Please see specific application requirements for each location.
