Class of 2007 Celebrates Match

The Class of 2007 learned their residency matches at celebrations in Reno and in Las Vegas. The 52 students matched with 36 different residency institutions across the nation and will enter specialties ranging from Family Practice and Internal Medicine to Ophthalmology and Neurosurgery.  Nine graduates will stay in the state to enter into residency programs offered through the University of Nevada School of Medicine. More than one-fourth of this year’s graduating class matched with residency programs not currently offered within the state.

“We are very proud of our students’ placements,” said Cheryl Hug-English, M.D., associate dean of admissions and student affairs.  “The University of Nevada School of Medicine has a tradition of placing in competitive programs, but the performance of the Class of 2007 is beyond our expectations.  Not only did our entire class find a match, but the quality of programs they will be attending is phenomenal.”

In addition to today’s match results, five students received their match notification last month.  These students participated in the San Francisco Match and Military Match which were developed to accommodate the most competitive of residency programs.  Students placing in the early matches will enter specialties including neurosugery, ophthalmology, and general surgery.

Med Student competing in Las Vegas Marathon
School of Medicine third year medical student Isabella Kuo will be competing in the 2005 New Las Vegas Marathon Sunday, Dec. 4 at 6 a.m. where weather is expected to be in the 50 degree range. This will be the third marathon for Isabella. She has run in the Boston Marathon and the Nike Marathon in San Francisco. She hurries to add that she ran for charity in the Boston Marathon, which requires a qualification time. Charity or not, the marathon competition suited her, however, and she has kept at it while in medical school.

"If I can run in a marathon, anyone can do it," she said. "I get to meet new people and stay healthy."

Other medical students have volunteered to help at the race. Some of those include Christine Puhl, MS IV; Huy Truong, MS III, his wife and sister-in-law; Heather Finney, MS IV, and her boyfriend; Robert Troiano, MS III, and Yossi Martel, MS III. James Lenhart, M.D., Vice Dean for the SOM Las Vegas Campus has organized volunteers from the SOM to assist with the race, along with a team of runners.

This is the first race to incorporate the Las Vegas Strip all the way through Fremont Street and the event will top out at 15,000 runners. KLAS-TV (Channel 8) will be providing live coverage.

The course can be found at this PDF file (http://www.lvmarathon.com/pdf/LVCourseMap.pdf), which begins at Mandalay Bay, heads up the Strip, through Fremont Street and beyond to W. Carey Ave., then loops around all the way down Torey Pines and Twain and Frank Sinatra Dr. back to Mandalay.

The race will include a team of Elvis impersonators, but you already knew that didn't you? This is Vegas, after all. Good luck to Isabella and the volunteers.
