UNSOM Students: Resources: USMLE Timeline and Resources


Medical students are required to take the following standardized exams, leading to medical licensure:

USMLE Step 1:  Assesses basic science knowledge from Years I and II. Students are required to take this computerized exam after completing Year II, prior to June 30. All students must pass this exam to complete graduation requirements for their degree. Students receive their scores beginning in July. Students who receive a passing score continue in Year III. Students who do not pass are required to stop Year III coursework to develop a study plan with the Office of Admissions and Student Affairs to retake the exam. USLME requires a minimum of 60 days between testing dates. Resources for Step I include:

USMLE Step 2 - Clinical Knowledge:  Step 2 is taken during the clinical years. Students are prepared for this exam anytime after completing Year III. Passage of this exam is required to meet graduation requirements. Students are strongly encouraged to prepare for and take this test prior to December 15 of Year IV. Students who complete and pass this exam are much stronger applicants to residency programs. More information on Step 2 CK is available.

USMLE Step 2 - Clinical Skills:  This exam assesses clinical communication and consists of 12 standardized patient encounters. Students are strongly encouraged to take this exam prior to December 30 of their senior year. Passage of this exam is required to meet graduation requirements.  In addition to the preparation provided during Year III, students also prepare for this exam through the standardized patient testing conducted by the Office of Medical Education in Years II and III.  This exam is taken at one of five national testing sites. Plan to register early as sites do fill up. More information on Step 2 CS is available.

Costs of Exams: Medical students receive financial aid to cover the cost of exam fees, including the travel costs required for Step 2 - Clinical Skills. USMLE fee information is available. (Scroll down to middle of the page.)

Getting Your Scores:  The Coordinator of Medical Student Records downloads scores approximately three weeks after students complete the exam. The Associate Dean for Admissions and Student Affairs contacts students via email or telephone to notify them of their exam result.
