UNSOM Students: Student Life: Special Events: Hooding Ceremony
The Academic Hooding Ceremony concludes the end of Graduation week activities that consists of a Student/Faculty Awards Ceremony, Annual Senior Golf Tournament, Senior Show, Dean's Dinner and finally the Academic Hooding. It is also the culmination of a medical student's achievement of the M.D. degree. Each May, the School of Medicine Academic Hooding Ceremony celebrates a medical student's graduation. During the ceremony, a 'hooder' selected by the student, places an academic 'hood' over the student's head. The colors on the hood represent the Silver and Blue colors of the University of Nevada and green velvet, running along a black background, represents the academic color of medicine. It is recommended that graduates select physician mentors as their hooders but are free to select an individual who represents someone who supported and helped them achieve their goal of medicine. The ceremony is a very personal one for students, their families and friends, who celebrate this achievement with University President, Regents, Dean and Associate Deans, along with other faculty and staff of the School of Medicine.
The ceremony is held the second Friday of each May. Information on the Hooding Ceremony can be found here.
