UNSOM Students: Student Life: Student Outreach Clinic
The School of Medicine operates a free, medical student managed clinic in Reno. The Student Outreach Clinic (SOC) was founded in 1996 by students and is operated by students who are supervised by faculty physicians. The clinic combines the educational and health care missions of the medical school. Patients who are medically indigent can receive health care, screening, diagnosis and some treatments, in addition to referrals. Medical students receive valuable, hands-on patient care experience in their first two years of medical school. Students also learn about clinic management, health access, health insurance issues and other valuable information through their experience in the clinic.
Funding for the clinic comes from grants and local philanthropy by community members and physicians. The clinic is jointly operated with the Salvation Army and is located near the Salvation Army offices on Oddie Boulevard in Reno.
