Family physicians are those who practice the specialty of family medicine. Training and experience qualify them to practice in several fields of medicine and surgery, with particular emphasis on the family unit. The AAFP exists to provide students with access to information regarding a career in family medicine. Annual dues of $5 are paid for students by the Nevada Academy of Family Physicians. Membership includes a subscription to the AAFP monthly journal. Information about residencies, national conferences, etc., is also available through the AAFP student representative.

American Medical Association - Medical Student Section (AMA)

The AMA allows students to join through a direct membership option. The major benefits to medical students are subscriptions to JAMA and American Medical News, which are included in the $15 membership fee. Other benefits are free AMA seminars, conferences, CME meetings, practice workshops, seminars, low cost insurance and a placement service. Indirect benefits include educational experiences and interactions with students at other schools. Further information can be obtained by writing to the AMA at 535 N. Dearborn Street, Chicago, IL 60610. There is a Nevada chapter of the AMA MSS which sends a delegate to the regional and national AMA meetings. The chapter will hold meetings and will cooperate with the Nevada State Medical Association Student Chapter.

amsa American Medical Student Association (AMSA)

AMSA membership offers benefits to all students, including The New Physician magazine, task force newsletters, workshops and conventions, local project grants for health related community projects, insurance plans, and discounts on many publications. The local chapter of AMSA annually prepares a handbook for the clinical years and sponsors periodic lunchtime seminars. Christian Medical Society (CMS)
The Christian Medical Society is a national organization dedicated to motivate, educate, and equip Christian physicians to glorify God by: living out the character of Christ in their homes, practices, communities and around the world; pursuing professional competence and Christ-like compassion in their daily work; influencing their families, colleagues, and patients toward a right relationship with Jesus Christ; and advancing Biblical principles in bioethics and health to the Church and society. The UNSOM student chapter of CMA consists of interested medical students who meet bimonthly for fellowship and to hear Christian healthcare professionals from throughout the community share how they ethically and appropriately integrate their faith into their practice. Although student membership in the national organization is free, it is not required to participate in the UNSOM student chapter.

Student Interest Groups

  • Family Medicine Interest Group
    • We invite all friends and family members of medical students to join us! Our group was formed for those individuals who are interested in getting to know others involved in the life of a medical student. We enjoy getting to know each other, spending time together, and planning different activities to help support the students. There is an organized playgroup for families with children, birthday celebrations to participate in, and parties to enjoy. Our group offers a chance to build new friendships and opportunities to get together and share our stories. Contact Hayley Cochran (jdcochran76@hotmail.com) to learn more
