Clinical Care

Clinical experience includes direct care for patients in community and long-term care settings in order to the interaction of natural aging and disease. Techniques of assessment, therapy, and management for elder patients encompass preventive health-care measures, understanding of the socio-behavioral aspects of aging and illness as well as health literacy issues. Ethical and legal factors also are considered with regards to medical management.

Education

The Division of Geriatric Medicine currently sponsors two fellowship programs, the HPM and the Geriatric Medicine Fellowship, and an American Geriatrics Society, Geriatrics for Surgery Training grant which provides geriatrics education for surgery residents rotating through the Veteran Affairs from East Bay UCSF Surgery training program in collaboration with Dr. Patricia May.

Research

Research experience includes increasing research methodology skills related to geriatric and hospice palliative medicine, such as clinical epidemiology, decision analysis, and critical literature review. Communicating research finding via lectures and research papers to peers and the community are also incorporated.

Faculty

The Division’s collaborative team consists of general surgery, pharmacy, orthopedics, podiatry, emergency medicine, dentistry, audiology, physical and social services. Interdisciplinary team coordination is comprised of physicians, nurses, social workers and other health professionals.
