UNSOM Recruitment & Outreach: High School Students: High School Partnerships

Hug High School Science Bound Program
The School of Medicine has had a partnership with Hug High School's Science Department for many years. One of the important programs offered to Hug High School students is Science Bound.

Science Bound brings together medical students with Hug High School students, in a group based mentoring environment, to discuss college life, science as a career, and medical and health professions as well as increase the number of Hug students who go on to college and, potentially, into science, medical, and health related careers. The program is a partnership between the high school and medical school.

Medical Students: Information on the program is sent out to MS I and II medical students each fall semester. For information how to be a Science Bound Mentor, contact gina@med.unr.edu.

High School Student Application: All AP Biology students at Hug High School are eligible to apply. Ten students will be selected to participate by the Science Department faculty. Students must be committed to participate in ALL activities over the course of the academic school year, maintain a solid GPA, and have good attendance records. Students MUST attend the Kick-Off Meeting on Wednesday, October 25, 6-7p at the School of Medicine to secure their space in the program.

Activities: Hug High students will have the opportunity to tour the UNR/UNSOM campus, learn about health and medicine, participate in several hands-on activities, meet current college and medical students, as well as have questions answered about achieving a college education, and attend social events such as miniature golf, bowling or skating.

Students must fill out the application and turn it in to Mr. Powers no later than Wednesday, October 11, by Noon. For more information about the program contact Mr. Powers in room C-8 or Judy Hanrahan at 784-6063 x2019 or jhanraha@unr.nevada.edu.

Students MUST attend the Kick-Off Meeting on Wednesday, October 25 to secure their space in the program. A calendar of the fall activities can be found here.
