UNSOM Recruitment & Outreach: Middle School Students

This is a time when students begin to think about careers. Most students start to try to figure out what classes/subjects they like or don't like. Students begin to decide if they like or don't like science, math, and other subjects. Many students who later go on to become physicians or scientists, aren't thinking about it all at this age. What can you do to prepare?

Try to learn about science programs: If science hasn't seemed that interesting to you in school, try to attend a science camp, like Summer of Discovery. These programs, often at universities, teach science differently and it is more like science is in a laboratory or how it is used by a doctor.

students Keep challenging yourself in school: Take the hardest classes you can. This is the best way to get ready for high school.

Find some activities outside of class that you like to do: Get involved in a club or sports. Try to find out what you like doing. This is a great time to explore and learn more about yourself.

Don't shut off your mind to opportunities: It is easy to take one class and decide you don't like that subject. But you have many years of school ahead of you. You may find a class later on in that subject is really interesting. Science and health care are exciting and there are many good-paying and interesting jobs out there in these areas so don't give up on them too early.

Learn more about careers: Talk to your doctor at your next visit about why he or she likes the work. Use the internet to learn more about careers.
