MEET THE SURGERY CENTER'S TEAM!
Shawn Tsuda, M.D.
Dr. Tsuda is fellowship trained in minimally invasive surgery, with a focus on bariatric surgery. He joined the Division of Bariatric Surgery in August 2008. He specializes in minimally invasive surgical techniques including the laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, laparoscopic adjustable gastric band, foregut surgery, ventral and inguinal hernia repairs, endoscopy, and basic laparoscopy.
Dr. Tsuda is dedicated to research and education, and he is the director of surgical skills and simulation for the University of Nevada School of Medicine’s residency program. He is certified in the Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS) and serves as a FLS course instructor. In 2008, Dr. Tsuda won first place in the Top Gun Laparoscopic Skills Shoot-Out at the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons meeting.
He graduated medical school from the University of Hawaii, and completed his general surgery residency at the University of Nevada School of Medicine. Dr. Tsuda’s fellowship training was completed at Harvard Medical School. He is board certified in general surgery by the American Board of Surgery.
Robin Morello, R.N.
The Division of Bariatric Surgery is very fortunate to employ a nurse coordinator who understands the challenges of weight loss surgery through her own experiences. Ms. Morello assists Dr. Lau with the various clinical components for the Division, including her role as the patient liaison and coordinator for the support groups.
Ms. Morello is a registered nurse, and she has over 12 years experience in the field of health care. She is also certified as a medical assistant. Robin was previously employed at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Dr. Varras was appointed to the Department of Internal Medicine in 2000. His clinical interests include both the management and prevention of heart disease and diabetes. He is specifically interested in managing patients with lipid disorders, difficult to control blood pressure, and/or heart failure.
In addition, Dr. Varras specializes in treating patients who are diabetic, and he provides them with prevention education, as well as management for complications.
Dr. Varras received his undergraduate degree from the University of Wyoming. For his medical degree, Dr. Varras attended Creighton University, where he also completed his residency in Internal Medicine.
Howard Spinowitz, D.O.
Dr. Spinowitz has a strong interest in working with bariatric patients. In 2007, he received special training at Stanford University School of Medicine, in conjunction with Dr. Lau’s fellowship program in minimally invasive surgery-bariatric surgery.
Dr. Spinowitz attended the State University of New York for his undergraduate degree. He completed medical school at the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine. He also attended a residency in internal medicine at Beth Israel Medical Center. In addition, Dr. Spinowitz completed his anesthesiology residency at the State University of New York.
Jill Margolis, Ph.D.
Dr. Margolis has been a practicing psychologist for over twenty years. As the Vice Chair for the Department of Surgery, her clinical interests include patients that suffer from morbid obesity with related conditions, such as depression. She also has a strong interest in medical-legal matters. In addition, her research focus is aimed at family therapy, compulsive disorders, and pathological gambling.
Dr. Margolis is a licensed clinical psychologist, and she received her doctoral degree from the University of Minnesota.
Joanna Gorman, M.P.A., R.D., C.D.E.
Ms. Gorman is the dietician for the Division of Bariatric Surgery, and she has almost 20 years of experience in hospital and outpatient settings. Joanna has worked with bariatric patients for four years. She understands the complexities in implementing nutrition strategies, and incorporates an individualized style of counseling for each of her patients.
Ms. Gorman also holds a master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Nevada at Las Vegas. Joanna earned a certificate in diabetic education from the National Board of Diabetic Educators, and she is currently the Vice President of the Nevada Educator’s Association for Diabetes. She also has a certificate in weight loss management from the American Diabetic Association.
