Infobuttons LITE: The Librarian Infobutton Tailoring Environment
James Cimino is a professor of Biomedical Informatics and Medicine at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, where he has been involved in medical informatics research and development for the past 20 years. His research areas have included controlled biomedical terminologies, clinical information systems and Infobuttons, which are context-aware links from clinical systems to on-line information resources. He has published over 170 scientific papers and co-authored a leading textbook on biomedical informatics. He is a board certified internist, and is a fellow of the American College of Physicians, the American Medical Informatics Association, the American Clinical and Climatological Society Association, and the New York Academy of Medicine.

Thomas G. Basler, Ph.D., FMLA
Outreach: Repurposing the Vision - Transforming the Staff!
Thomas Basler is Director of Libraries and Learning Resource Centers and Professor and Chairman of the Department of Library Science & Informatics, Medical University of South Carolina. During his career he has directed libraries at the Medical College of Georgia, the New York Academy of Medicine, and the American Museum of Natural History. He is a Fellow of the Medical Library Association and a past chair of the National Library of Medicine’s Informatics Review Section for NIH. Since taking over as Director of Libraries at MUSC in 1991 Thomas has transformed the library from its traditional role to one that focuses energy on community health information outreach programs throughout South Carolina.

Dr. Mary Guinan, M.D., Ph.D.
Public Health Experiences in Nevada: From Cancer Clusters to Hanta Virus
Dr. Guinan is a physician and scientist who was employed at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in various scientific and administrative positions for over 20 years. Dr. Guinan participated in the worldwide smallpox eradication program assigned to India in 1975, was a member of the first CDC AIDS Task Force that investigated the emerging AIDS epidemic in 1981. Her work is described in the book and movie “And the Band Played On.” In 1995 Dr. Guinan led the CDC initiative to develop Urban Research Centers (URC) to promote the health and improve the quality of life of inner city disadvantaged urban residents. In 1998 Dr. Guinan became the Nevada State Public Health Officer and led the State’s public health system. She convened a national panel of experts to aid in the investigation of a cluster of cases of childhood leukemia in Fallon, Nevada. Most recently Dr. Guinan has served as the Executive Director for the Nevada Public Health Foundation. She joined UNLV as Founding Dean of the new School of Public Health in 2004.

Panelist Profiles:

Robert A. Wise, M.D.
Vice President
Division of Standards and Survey Methods
Dr. Robert Wise is the vice president of the division of standards and survey methods at The Joint Commission. In this position, he is responsible for the development of all standards and survey methods for current and new accreditation programs. Additionally, in response to emerging critical issues in health care quality and safety, Dr. Wise conducts research to assess the value of creating or modifying accreditation standards.
Before joining The Joint Commission, Dr. Wise most recently held positions with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois as the medical director of the HMO. Prior to that, he worked at the Michael Reese Health Plan, a large staff model HMO in Chicago. While there, he held several positions including the chairmanship of the Department of Mental Health and as a regional medical director for the plan. Additional experience includes 13 years of private practice in general psychiatry in both public and private settings.
Dr. Wise earned his medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine and holds board certification from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

Mark E. Funk, AHIP

Mark Funk is currently serving as president of the Medical Library Association for 2007/08. A native Missourian, he has been Head of Collection Development at the Weill Cornell Medical Library in New York City for 20 years, where he still likes to look at tall buildings. In his spare time he enjoys respirating and metabolizing.

Jacqueline Doyle,

Jacqueline Donaldson Doyle has worked in a wide variety of libraries. Her experience includes public, academic, public health, and hospital libraries, as well as consulting with society and hospital libraries. She earned her M.S. in Library Science from California State University, Fullerton, and has completed post-graduate coursework in gerontology and business administration. She is a past president of both MLGSCA and MLA. Since July, 2006, she has been the Librarian for the University of Arizona College of Medicine-Phoenix which enrolled its first 4-year medical students in August of that year.

Peter Meyer,

Peter Meyer is Regional Library Coordinator for eighteen Kaiser Permanente health sciences libraries in Northern California. His MLIS is from the University of California at Berkeley. He has worked in library services for over 25 years, and also has experience in corporate and public libraries and as a library consultant. He has had occasional lapses from grace during this time, when he worked as a journalist, corporate television producer, and director of market research director for a computer company and a publisher. Unless there is another dot-com boom without a subsequent bust, he will probably not stray from the fold again.

Katherine Stemmer Frumento,

Greenwich Hospital
Katherine Stemmer Frumento is the Director of Library Services at Greenwich Hospital in Greenwich, CT. Prior to joining Greenwich Hospital, Katherine was the Library Director at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. She is currently the MLA/HLS JC liaison. Other MLA activities include Hospital Library Section Chair (2005); Vital Pathways Task Force Steering Committee; and the former editor of the Hospital Library Section’s newsletter National Network. Her most recent publication is “The role of the hospital librarian on an Institutional Review Board” in Journal of Hospital Librarianship 2007 7(4). She also is on the editorial board for Medicine on the Net. Katherine is a Dale Carnegie graduate and a Six Sigma green belt.
