Trainings offered in Caliente, Mesquite
for caregivers of those with dementia

LAS VEGAS, Nev.— The Sanford Center for Aging, Nevada Cooperative Extension and the Nevada Geriatric Education Center (a joint program between the Sanford Center for Aging and the University of Nevada School of Medicine) will hold two conferences for caregivers of those suffering from dementia in Caliente on Wednesday, April 29 and Mesquite on Thursday, April 30.

          The “Use and Misuse of Psychotropic Medications and Legal Considerations for Determining Capacity” training will be held at Grover C. Dils Medical Center, 700 North Spring Street, Caliente on Wednesday, April 29 and at the Mesa View Regional Hospital, 1299 Bertha Howe Avenue, Mesquite on Thursday, April 30 from 8:45 a.m. to 11 a.m. both days.

          The “Medication Management, Medication Alternatives, and Legal Considerations for Persons with Dementia” training will be held at the Olson Senior Center, 240 Front Street, Caliente on Wednesday and at Mesquite Campus The Deuce, 150 North Yucca Street, Suite 1, Mesquite on Thursday from 12:45 to 4:15 p.m. both days.

           By the end of the first trainings, participant will be able to list four non-pharmacological interventions to manage neuropsychiatric behaviors in persons with dementia, describe two benefits of using CHEI’s in persons with Alzheimer's Disease, discuss four risks or adverse effects of using antipsychotics in persons with dementia and discuss legal considerations when working with persons with dementia. This program has been submitted for nurses and social workers for 1.75 hours of continuing education units.

           The second trainings will address tips for managing multiple medications, use and misuse of medication to manage behavior in persons with dementia, planning for incompetency and laws protecting persons with dementia. This program has been submitted for long term care administrators, nurses, and social workers for 3.0 hours of continuing education units, which are available for a $15 fee.

          The programs are intended for healthcare professionals, patients, caregivers and those wishing to learn more. Registrations are accepted on a space-available basis and includes program materials and certificate of attendance.
