Tony Chang, M.D., selected for School of Medicine's
sports medicine fellowship in Reno

Fellowship matched to number one candidate

RENO, Nev.— The University of Nevada School of Medicine announces the addition of Tony Chang, M.D., to the sports medicine fellowship which begins its second year this July in Reno.

Chang’s application was reviewed by a panel last fall and he was the number one candidate for the program.

“We’re excited about the addition of Dr. Chang to the fellowship,” said Carol Scott, M.D., sports medicine fellowship director and assistant director of the Student Health Center. “He is a great guy and a nice match for us based on his work in his Family Medicine residency, his academic performance and his extensive sports medicine experience.”

As a fellow, Chang will receive training in sports medicine for one year. He will spend two half days a week treating patients in the Family Medicine Center and one half-day a week in the UNR Student Health sports medicine clinic. He will also spend time assisting the training staff in the University of Nevada athletics department. Dr. Chang will work with student athletes to prevent injury and assist in the treatment of acute injuries.

The sports medicine fellowship encompasses prevention, diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions specific to athletes and exercising individuals. Successful completion of the fellowship allows the resident to apply for the Certification of Added Qualification in Sports Medicine. In addition to Chang’s work at the UNR Student Health Center, the Family Medicine Center and Nevada Athletics, he will spend time with many community physicians involved in the care of athletes and exercising individuals.

The fellowship program partners with a variety of organizations throughout northern Nevada, such as Nevada Intercollegiate Athletic teams, Sierra Dive Center Scuba, the Reno Rodeo, Nevada Physical Therapy, Incline Village Community Hospital and the Tahoe Truckee Medical Group at Squaw Valley USA, to provide fellows experience in an array of sporting events unique to the area. Partnerships also include training with physicians at Sierra Nevada Cardiology, Sierra Regional Spine Center and Disabled Sports USA, Advanced Orthopedics, Sierra Tahoe Orthopedic and Sports Medicine, Reno Orthopaedic Clinic, Silver Sage Sports Performance, Arthritis Center of Reno, Eye Care Professionals, Elite Sports Medicine and other specialists in ENT, psychology, nutrition, pharmacology, pathology and wilderness medicine. Additionally, the program will have an ongoing relationship with REMSA, which will provide Chang clinical access to more than 300 athletic events in the area.
