Training offered for caregivers of those suffering from dementia
February workshops offered in Reno and Las Vegas
LAS VEGAS/RENO, Nev.— The Nevada Geriatric Education Center (a joint program between the Sanford Center for Aging and the University of Nevada School of Medicine) is holding a conference for caregivers of those suffering from dementia on Feb. 3 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in room 103 of the William J. Raggio Building at the University of Nevada, Reno and again on Feb. 12 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension’s Lifelong Learning Center, 8050 Paradise Rd., Las Vegas.
The workshop offers a wide range of services including sessions where participants will learn to differentiate between normal brain function and dementia, delirium, and depression, and how to identify symptoms of mild cognitive impairment. Participants will also be able to list non-pharmacological interventions that can be implemented to redirect, de-escalate, or prevent undesirable behavior. New program changes at the Bureau of Health Care Quality and Compliance related to medication refresher testing, the grading system, statements of deficiencies and legal options available to plan for incompetency and after incompetency will be discussed at the conference.
The program is intended for directors, administrators and staff of homes for individual residential care, residential facilities for groups, assisted living facilities, nursing facilities, caregivers, and others interested in the topic.
Registration is only $25, and includes program materials, for those signing up by Jan. 23 for Reno and before Feb. 2 for Las Vegas. This program has been submitted to the State of Nevada Board of Examiners for Long Term Care Administrators for long-term care administrators and the State of Nevada Board of Examiners for social workers for seven hours of continuing education credit. The University of Nevada School of Medicine also approves this program for seven hours of continuing-credit for nurses.
