University of Nevada School of Medicine
department of pediatrics receives two grants
LAS VEGAS, Nev.--The University of Nevada School of Medicine Department of Pediatrics has received two grants.
Target presented the department with a $5,000 grant as part of that company’s community giving outreach program to support the department’s Reach Out and Read program in Las Vegas. The program targets young children growing up in poverty without books. The three-prong program aims to improve literacy by training volunteers to read with children in pediatric clinic waiting areas; encourages pediatricians to educate parents on the importance of reading; and distributes, free-of-charge, new books to each child from 6 months to 5 years of age after a check up.
“Target Corporation has a strong tradition of giving back to the communities where it does business. Their support of Reach Out and Read helps us provide an opportunity for our pediatricians and parents to actively encourage reading to their children,” notes Renu Jain, M.D., Associate Professor of Pediatrics.
The department also received a grant for nearly $50,000 from MGM Mirage Voice Foundation to support the Adolescent Health Clinic at Kids Healthcare in Las Vegas.
“The Mirage is committed to helping make Las Vegas a better community. That philosophy is reflected in their grant making which supports our department’s important programs aimed at serving the adolescent population in the Las Vegas Valley,” notes Caroline Barangan, M.D., Assistant Professor, Adolescent Medicine and Director of the Adolescent Health Clinic at Kids Healthcare.
