Free training offered in Fallon for caregivers
of those suffering from dementia

RENO, Nev.— The Sanford Center for Aging, Nevada Cooperative Extension and the Nevada Geriatric Education Center (a joint program between the Sanford Center for Aging and the University of Nevada School of Medicine) will hold two free conferences for caregivers of those suffering from dementia in Fallon on Wednesday, April 8.

          "The Use and Misuse of Psychotropic Medications and Legal Considerations for Determining Capacity" training will be held from 8:45 to 11 a.m. at Banner Churchill Community Hospital in the Lake Tahoe Room, 801 East Williams Avenue.

          "The Medication Management, Medication Alternatives, and Legal Considerations for Persons with Dementia" training will be held from 12:45 to 4:15 p.m. at the Churchill County Senior Center, 310 Court Street.

           The first training session will provide participants with the ability to list non-pharmacological interventions to manage neuropsychiatric behaviors in persons with dementia, describe benefits of using CHEI’s in persons with Alzheimer Disease, discuss risks or adverse effects of using antipsychotics in persons with dementia and discuss legal considerations when working with persons with dementia. This program has been submitted for nurses and social workers for 1.75 hours of continuing education units.

            The second training will address tips for managing multiple medications, when antipsychotic medications are suitable and alternatives to medication in persons with dementia and planning for incompetency and laws protecting persons with dementia. This program has been submitted for long term care administrators, nurses, and social workers for 3.0 hours of continuing education units, which are available for a $15 fee.


           The programs are intended for healthcare professionals, patients, caregivers and those wishing to learn more and are free of charge for those who submit registrations at least 5 days prior to training.
