Michael Jakoby, M.D., M.A., named internal medicine chair for University of Nevada School of Medicine
Endocrinology chief to assume new role Aug. 1 in Las Vegas
LAS VEGAS, Nev.— Michael Jakoby, M.D., M.A. has been named Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Nevada School of Medicine in Las Vegas. Jakoby, who replaces Daniel Goodenberger, M.D., will begin in this new role August 1, 2008.
“Like everyone else at the School of Medicine, I am sorry to see Dr. Goodenberger leave,” says Jakoby, who is board-certified in internal medicine and endocrinology. “I hope to build upon the foundation of accomplishments Dr. Goodenberger has achieved. I have great hopes for our department and am encouraged by the future.”
Jakoby currently serves as an associate professor and Chief of the Division of Endocrinology.
“Dr. Jakoby’s outstanding clinical and administrative skills have been critical in our joint development of a Diabetes Center of Excellence with University Medical Center,” says Ole Thienhaus, M.D., MBA, medical school dean. “These skills will lead to his success as department chair.”
Jakoby has held faculty positions in the Lipid Research Division at Washington University and the Divisions of Endocrinology and Nutritional Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign prior to coming to the University of Nevada. He served as academic section head of endocrinology at the University of Illinois and division chief of endocrinology at Carle Clinic Association while in Urbana-Champaign.
Jakoby’s primary clinical interest is diabetes management and his primary research interest is hospital diabetology. His clinical research has focused on the impact of hyperglycemia and benefits of tight glycemic control for diabetic patients admitted to non-critical care hospital units. He has also collaborated with investigators at the Army Construction Engineers Research Laboratory to develop a thyroid follicular cell-based assay for rapid and accurate detection of perchlorate in water samples.
Jakoby has served on the editorial board of Carle Selected Papers, and he continues to edit Clinicopathological Conference cases for the journal. Jakoby holds professional memberships in the American Diabetes Association, Endocrine Society, and American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists.
Jakoby attended the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri, completing a dual medical degree and master’s degree in biochemistry and molecular biophysics in 1995. He conducted his residency training in internal medicine at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University in St. Louis where he also received his fellowship training in endocrinology.
