School of Medicine doctor named

"Physician of the Year"

James G. Lenhart, M.D. honored by Nevada Academy of Family Physicians

Las Vegas , Nev.—James G. Lenhart, M.D., vice dean of the University of Nevada School of Medicine has been named 2007 Physician of the Year in Southern Nevada by the Nevada Academy of Family Physicians.  The award, voted upon by more than 500 family physicians throughout the state, honors Dr. Lenhart for “providing patients with compassionate, comprehensive and caring family medicine on a continuing basis.”

 

 Thomas Hunt, M.D., a colleague of Dr. Lenhart’s and a past recipient of the prestigious honor notes, “Jim Lenhart has worked tirelessly to improve the health of all Nevadans.  He continually advocates for family physicians across the state and through his leadership at the national level is a powerful voice for physicians and patients.  He is a role model for future generations of family physicians and indeed has trained many family physicians now in practice throughout Nevada.  He is involved in community affairs and activities that enhance the quality of life for all Nevadans.”

 

 On the national level Dr. Lenhart is Nevada’s congressional contact for the American Academy of Family Physicians in their effort to promote affordable access to quality healthcare.  He serves as key legislative contact to Sen. Harry Reid on a variety of health care issues.

 

 Dr. Lenhart is the former chair of family medicine at the University of Nevada School of Medicine.  Under his leadership fellowship programs were created in sports medicine and family medicine obstetrics.  He now also serves as special assistant to Nevada System of Higher Education Chancellor Jim Rogers for the University of Nevada Health Science System.

As the state’s only public medical school, the University of Nevada School of Medicine has been meeting statewide healthcare, educational, and clinical needs since 1969. The School of Medicine encompasses 16 clinical medical education departments, including family medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics/gynecology, internal medicine, surgery, and psychiatry and behavioral sciences, as well as five nationally-recognized departments within basic science including microbiology and biomedical engineering. As the largest multispecialty healthcare focus in the state, the School of Medicine employs more than 185 doctors who teach and practice medicine throughout Nevada. The school’s statewide faculty physician practice group has 25 different medical specialties with seven physician practice offices in the Reno/Sparks area and five physician offices in Las Vegas.
