School of Medicine offers program to encourage high school juniors to consider healthcare careers
RENO, Nev.— The University of Nevada School of Medicine will host the three-week High School Medical Scholars program, designed to help high school seniors determine if a career in the medical profession is right for them, July 8 through 27.
The residential program, which is offered at the school’s Reno campus, offers a variety of experiences, coupled with guidance and information, to help students formulate future plans in the medical field.
Students stay in University dormitories, participate in activities using medical school and University classrooms, group rooms and labs and interact with local health professionals. They will participate in career exploration including small group exercises, career shadowing, clinical studies and case writing. Program highlights include discussions with health professionals, scientists and medical and allied health students as well as tours of the medical school, local hospitals, clinics and research laboratories.
The program’s 20 participants will also receive an orientation to college campus life, participate in team-building activities, personal career planning guidance sessions and a wilderness medicine hike.
Students who will be the first in their families to attend college or who attend high schools where low number of students enter higher education are encouraged to participate.
