Medical students offer free immunization clinic
August 18 clinic offers parents opportunity to get back-to-school shots for kids
RENO, Nev. – Medical students from the University of Nevada School of Medicine will offer free immunization shots for school-age children on Saturday, August 18 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The immunization clinic will be held during the school’s monthly Student Outreach Clinic, located at University Health System’s Family Medicine Center, off North Virginia Street on the University of Nevada, Reno campus just north of Mackay Stadium near the School of Medicine.
All vaccines recommended by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and required by the Washoe County School District, including Hepatitis B; Pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PVC); diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis; meningitis, polio; measles, mumps, rubella; chicken pox; and bacterial meningitis will be available at the clinic.
“Vaccinations are an easy way to protect your child against potentially life-threatening diseases,” said Carissa Sparrow, a second-year medical student and immunization clinic organizer.
Children who have no insurance, are underinsured or qualify for Medicaid may also receive the Hepatitis A vaccine under CDC’s “Vaccines for Children” program. The clinic will also offer Head Start physicals to pre-schoolers as well as dental screenings to all children.
The one-day immunization clinic will be able to provide vaccines for up to 50 children. No insurance or appointment is necessary for clinic patients who are seen on a first come, first served basis.
Patients seeking further information about the Student Outreach Clinic should call 775-682-8646.
