Eight physicians in Las Vegas join University of Nevada School of Medicine

Physicians include four internists, two critical care specialists/pulmonologists, gastroenterologist and rheumatologist

LAS VEGAS, Nev.— The University of Nevada School of Medicine is pleased to announce the addition of eight faculty physicians to its growing internal medicine department in Las Vegas. The physicians include four internists, two critical care specialists/pulmonologists, gastroenterologist and rheumatologist.

"We are very excited to expand the clinical services we provide in Las Vegas," says John Varras, M.D., chair of internal medicine at the School of Medicine.

"We look forward to starting a new division of pulmonary critical care medicine and adding quality physicians to our current specialties."

With diverse medical backgrounds, Badrunnisa Hanif, M.D., Mahendra Jayaraj, M.D., Susan Knowles, M.D., Ranjit Makar, M.D., Hiren V. Patel, M.D., Samir Patel, M.D., and Vijay Jayaraman, M.D., bring a wealth of medical expertise and proven experience.

Internist Dr. Hanif completed residency at the University of Nevada School of Medicine and has practiced in Las Vegas for a number of years. Her clinical interests include diabetes, hypothyroidism and chronic disease management. She is board certified in internal medicine.

Internist Dr. Jayaraj completed residency at the University of Nevada School of Medicine. His clinical interests are perioperative medicine, inflammatory bowel disease and hepatitis C.

Gastroenterologist Vijay Jayaraman joins the division of gastroenterology. He did his residency training, chief resident year and gastroenterology fellowship at Stony Brook University Hospital in New York. He also completed an advanced endoscopy fellowship at Cedar Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He is board certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology.

Rheumatologist Dr. Knowles, a native of Las Vegas, graduated from the University of Nevada School of Medicine. She completed internal medicine residency, chief residency, and a rheumatology fellowship at the University of Arizona in Tucson. Her clinical interests include dermatomyositis, scleroderma and coccidioidomycosis in patients with rheumatic disease.

Internist Dr. Makar completed residency at the University of Nevada School of Medicine. His clinical interests include gastrointestinal diseases including reflux, irritable bowel syndrome, diabetes and preventive medicine. He will also be working in the School of Medicine's weight loss and maintenance clinic.

Critical care specialist and pulmonologist Dr. Hiren Patel completed residency training in internal medicine and pulmonary/critical care medicine at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. In addition, he completed post-graduate training in interventional pulmonology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. Dr. Patel is board certified in internal medicine and pulmonary medicine.

Internist Dr. Samir Patel, assistant professor of medicine, completed medical school residency at William Beaumont Army Medical Center in Texas and will be seeing patients in the patient care clinic.

Critical care specialist and pulmonologist Dr. Matthew Schreiber, a Las Vegas native, completed residency training in internal medicine and fellowship training in pulmonary disease and critical care medicine at Georgetown University/Washington Hospital Center. Schreiber holds a masters of health sciences through the graduate training program in clinical investigation at Johns Hopkins University.
