University of Nevada School of Medicine offers free health and fitness program to local families
RENO, Nev.—In the last 30 years the number of overweight children in the U.S. has more than tripled. This trend affects children of all ages and transcends ethnicity and income.
As the number of overweight children rises, more parents are looking for safe and effective programs to help their families adopt a fit and healthy lifestyle. Researchers within the University of Nevada School of Medicine department of pediatrics and University of Nevada, Reno department of psychology have developed the Fit and Healthy Kids program to meet this need.
Fit and Healthy Kids is a free six-week, web-based program that provides families with children between the ages of seven and 10 tailored skills for gradually adopting a healthier lifestyle. Children and families qualifying for participation in the program should meet the following guidelines:
- Child is between the age of seven and 10 years-old.
- Child’s weight is above recommendations for his or her age, sex, and height.
- Family doctor has expressed concern about child’s weight and has endorsed participation in a family-based health promotion program.
- It is a struggle for child to eat healthier and be more physically active.
Fit and Healthy Kids provides recommendations for safe and effective ways for the entire family to embrace and adopt a healthier lifestyle without following fad diets or extreme lifestyle changes that could be dangerous to developing children. The program is divided into five Fit and Healthy Family Lessons. The lessons address the skills families need to learn to live healthier lifestyles. The tailored exercises and practical tips in each lesson help families incorporate these skills into their daily routines.
