School of Medicine welcomes Daniel Shapiro, M.D., as internal medicine chair in Reno

Infectious disease specialist comes to Nevada from Boston

RENO, Nev.— The University of Nevada School of Medicine welcomes Daniel S. Shapiro, M.D., a board certified internist, as its new H. Edward Manville, Jr. Endowed Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine in Reno.

Shapiro, an infectious disease internist with expertise in emerging pathogens including bioterrorism, comes to Nevada from Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, where he served as associate professor as well as director of the clinical microbiology laboratories at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Mass.

The position at the University of Nevada School of Medicine appealed to Shapiro on several fronts.

“Here there is the expansion potential to grow fellowship and subspecialty programs. The medical student class size is also growing so there are plenty of opportunities to teach and the School of Medicine has collaborations with several hospitals in the area which is attractive,” he said, adding: “There are achievable challenges in Nevada and I can make a difference.”

In addition to bioterrorism and emerging pathogens, Shapiro’s academic interests include infections that can be transmitted from animals to humans, such as mad cow disease and avian flu, which has led to the process of writing a text book on the subject.

His clinical background includes caring for patients in urban, suburban and rural medical centers and treating illnesses specific to a geographic location.

The H. Edward Manville, Jr. Endowed Chair for Internal Medicine became the first endowment designated for the University of Nevada School of Medicine in 1968, a year before the school was officially founded, when $1,000,000 was pledged by the Hiram Edward Manville Foundation. Mr. H. Edward Manville, Jr. was among the earliest supporters of the medical school’s establishment, and a charter member of its advisory board.
