Kenton
M. Sanders, Ph. D.
Chairman
Research in the Department of Physiology & Cell Biology focuses on smooth muscle biology, ion channels, neuropharmacology, gastric motility, developmental neuroscience, and reproductive biology. Our Department ranks highest in extramural research funding among the Departments of the School of Medicine at the University of Nevada, as well as in the number of scientific articles published. The Department contributes to several NIH-funded Program grants such as Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence (“COBREs”), IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE) and a Program Project Grant (PPG) (in its 23rd year). Department Faculty Members publish between 30 and 50 peer-reviewed, PubMed-archived articles each year, including top journals in the field. The Department is responsible for 72% of the curriculum of our first-year medical students, and supports graduate student education in several programs, primarily the Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology and Physiology (CMPP) program which attracts and trains excellent students. In addition, the Department trains undergraduate students in an international student exchange program. Several Department faculty have been elected to perform editorial responsibilities.
