Dental General Practice Residency
The University of Nevada School of Medicine General Practice Residency (GPR) Program is located in Las Vegas, Nevada. It has been granted full Accreditation Status by the ADA commission of Dental Accreditation and participates in both the "PASS" and "MATCH" Programs.
Requirements for the program include graduation from an ADA accredited dental school and US or Canadian citizenship (or possession of a valid INS form I-151 or I-551). This is a one-year program with an optional second year. The stipend is $50,102.76 for the first year and $52,169.54 for the second year. Malpractice insurance is provided. Medical, dental and life insurance are available. A 403(b) retirement plan with a match of 6.2% is provided by the University. There is no state income tax in Nevada. Residents are permitted fifteen days of annual leave with pay.
The clinical phase of the program begins 1 July each year. This is preceded by a mandatory week of orientation. The clinic is open from 7:30 AM - 5:00 PM, five days a week. After hours Dental emergency coverage is performed by all residents on a rotating basis. The program is jointly sponsored by the Veterans Administration. Residents will spend approximately 4 ½ months in the VA dental clinic acquiring experience treating medically compromised and geriatric dental patients. The VA clinic has two Cerec units and a cone beam CT machine. Residents will learn to use CAD-CAM technology using Cerec technology and interpret CT scans when treatment planning implant placement.
The program provides advanced training in clinical and hospital dentistry. Skills necessary for the general dentist to provide comprehensive patient care for all population groups in both clinical and hospital settings will be developed and refined. Rotations in Family Medicine, Anesthesiology, and Emergency Room and Level One Trauma Center are an essential component of the program. Advanced training in conscious sedation is also provided.
Each resident is expected to successfully complete ACLS and PALS and become certified in conscious sedation. A graduate of this program will be able to evaluate the patient's total oral health needs, provide comprehensive general dental care, and learn when to refer the patient to a specialist(s) (when appropriate) while preserving continuity of patient care.
Our facilities consists of an impressive contingent of specialists and general practitioners, all specifically selected for their broad experience, clinical expertise and ability to share this experience and knowledge with the residents.
Upon completion of this program residents will have a working knowledge of:
- Hospital dentistry – providing dental care in an operating room setting and functioning in a hospital environment
- Treating medically compromised, geriatric and special needs patients in an inpatient and outpatient setting
- Comprehensive treatment planning involving multiple specialty areas
- Advanced surgical procedures including incision and drainage, biopsy, preprosthetic surgery, complex surgical extractions
- Fabrication and insertion of simple and complex fixed and removable prostheses
- Pediatric Dentistry
- Orthodontic diagnosis, treatment planning, appliance design and tooth movement
- Diagnosis, placement and restoration of dental implants. Internal and external sinus lift procedures. Guided tissue regeneration and other bone grafting techniques. Interpretation of cone beam CT scans.
- Emergency dentistry
- Conscious sedation (oral, inhalation and IV)
- All facets of Endodontics and Periodontics including surgical techniques
- Esthetic dentistry principles and treatment options (veneers, ceramic onlays, smile analysis, esthetic gingival procedures CAD-Cam dentistry utilizing Cerec technology)
- Practice management concepts to facilitate transition into private practice
As an optional two-year program, exceptional residents will be offered the opportunity to continue on for a second year of more advanced training and experience. At the end of the second year of advanced training, the resident will have been exposed to the equivalent of many years of diverse clinical and hospital experience and will depart with abilities and knowledge levels far above that of their peers.
The GPR program is housed in a modern, well-equipped facility located one block from the University of Nevada School of Medicine (UNSOM) and University Medical Center (UMC) the major training facility in Southern Nevada for all medical residency programs. The resident will receive hands on training with state-of-the-art equipment and dental materials including intra-oral video and digital cameras, lasers(CO2 and Er:YAG), CEREC CAD-CAM units, micro-abrasion units, digital radiography and seven surgical microscopes for Endodontics and general dentistry. The VA dental clinic is located within walking distance of the GPR clinic. It is a modern, high tech facility that is exceptionally well equipped.
