Emergency Medicine/Trauma Rotation


GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

  1. To recognize and provide initial treatment to life threatening injury and illness.
  2. To gain a comprehensive understanding of cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
  3. To develop the cognitive base necessary for diagnosis of common life threatening emergencies including:
    • Myocardial infarction/pulmonary edema
    • Shock
    • Coma/altered mental status
    • Acute poisonings
    • Respiratory distress
  4. Learn the basic principles of wound repair.
  5. To become familiar with the legal implications of patient care in the emergency department.
  6. To gain experience in performing the following procedures:
    • Endotracheal Intubation
    • Laceration Repair
  7. Observe when possible the following procedures:
    • Placement of Central Venous Lines, Nasogastric Tubes, Urinary Tract Catheters
    • Lumbar Puncture
    • Fracture Reduction and Splinting
