Emergency Medicine/Trauma Rotation
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
- To recognize and provide initial treatment to life threatening injury and illness.
- To gain a comprehensive understanding of cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
- To develop the cognitive base necessary for diagnosis of common life threatening emergencies including:
- Myocardial infarction/pulmonary edema
- Shock
- Coma/altered mental status
- Acute poisonings
- Respiratory distress
- Learn the basic principles of wound repair.
- To become familiar with the legal implications of patient care in the emergency department.
- To gain experience in performing the following procedures:
- Endotracheal Intubation
- Laceration Repair
- Observe when possible the following procedures:
- Placement of Central Venous Lines, Nasogastric Tubes, Urinary Tract Catheters
- Lumbar Puncture
- Fracture Reduction and Splinting
