Introduction
Thank you for your interest in the University of Nevada School of Medicine (Las Vegas) Internal Medicine Residency Program. For 2010-2011, we anticipate offering 14 Categorical positions and 6 Preliminary positions. Our program participates in the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP). Applications will only be accepted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Any information submitted outside of ERAS cannot be accepted.
Application Timeline
August 15, 2009
- Applicant ERAS registration begins at 12:00p. (Noon Eastern Standard Time)
September 1, 2009
- Programs may begin contacting the ERAS site to download applicant files.
November 1, 2009
- Medical School Performance Evaluations (MSPE) are released (Dean’s Letter)
December 1, 2009
- UNSOM (Las Vegas) application deadline. Applications must be complete by this date to be considered.
November 5, 2009 – January 28, 2010
February 24, 2010
- Applicant and program deadline for certifying rank order lists.
March 15, 2010
- Applicants notified if matched.
March 16, 2009
- Programs results for filled and unfilled positions posted to website at 12pm Eastern Standard Time.
- Unmatched applicants may contact unfilled programs at 12pm Eastern Standard Time.

Applicant Eligibility and Interview Criteria
In addition to the resident eligibility and selection criteria outlined in the UNSOM GME handbook, we use the following criteria.
- Applicants must apply through ERAS only. No faxed or mailed applications will be accepted.
- Applicants must have graduated from medical school or completed residency training within the past 5 years. If graduated from medical school within the past 8 years, an applicant should have been actively practicing medicine within the past 5 years.
- We look for scores on USMLE step 1 and 2 of greater than 200*†.
- Applicants who previously failed any step of the USMLE more than once will be removed from further consideration.
- Interviews are by invitation only.
- International medical graduates must have active Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certificates.
- We will sponsor J-1 and H-1B visas on a case-by-case basis. In order to qualify for an H-1B visa, you must have passed USMLE Step 3 by January 1, 2010. Successful completion of USMLE Step 3 is required to process an H-1B visa application.
- Applicants from osteopathic schools will be considered if they meet the above criteria. All applicants are required to take the USMLE. COMLEX scores will not be accepted.
* If accepted to the program, you will need to successfully complete USMLE Step 2 CK and CS, by matriculation. Reporting of USMLE scores can take up to 8 weeks, therefore you are strongly encouraged to take both parts of USMLE Step 2 prior to March 1.
† In order to qualify for an unrestricted license to practice medicine in the state of Nevada, one must have successfully completed all four components of USMLE Steps 1-3 within a 7 year time span.

- Three (3) Letters of Recommendation.

Information for International Medical Graduates
- International medical graduates must have active ECFMG certificates to be considered for an interview.
- We prefer a minimum of 2 months of clinical experience within the United States. Observerships and Externships are applicable if you can obtain written recommendation from a U.S. Physician who observed you during such time.
- We will sponsor J-1 and H-1B visas on a case-by-case basis. In order to qualify for an H-1B visa, you must have passed USMLE Step 3 by January 1, 2010. Successful completion of USMLE Step 3 is required in order to process an H-1B visa application.
- At least one letter of recommendation should be from a physician within the United States. This physician must have observed your clinical skills.
- We do not offer Observorships or Externships.
Information for Osteopathic Medical Students
- You are required to take USMLE in order for your application to be considered.
Information for Residents with Previous U.S. Post-Graduate Training

Before accepting a resident from a preliminary year or categorical residency from another accredited training program (either from within the UNSOM system or from an outside institution), a written verification of previous educational experience and an evaluation of past performance must be secured from the resident’s current and/or previous program director(s). Such evaluation must include an evaluation of the individual’s performance in each of the requisite six core competencies.
