David A. Gremse, MD, FAAP, FACG, Professor and Chair
Dr. Gremse has served as chair of the Department of Pediatrics since 2004. He completed his undergraduate medical education and pediatric residency training at the University of South Alabama in Mobile. He undertook a fellowship in pediatric gastroenterology and nutrition at Children's Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati before returning to Alabama.
While serving there as director of the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition, he was promoted to professor and became interim chair of pediatrics in his last years there before moving to Las Vegas. Jack Lazerson, MD, Program Director, Professor and Chief, Section on Pediatric Hematology
Dr. Lazerson is a graduate of the Chicago Medical School and completed a pediatric residency at Stanford-Palo Alto Hospital. He was chief resident in pediatrics and senior fellow in biochemistry at the University of Washington in Seattle.
His area of expertise is inherited and acquired bleeding disorders, and he is a consultant to the State Newborn Screening Program for Sickle Cell Anemia and other Hemoglobinopathies. Adolescent Medicine
Caroline Barangan, MD, FAAP, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, Chief, Section on Adolescent Medicine and Associate Program Director for Recruitment
Dr. Barangan received her medical degree from Mount Sinai School of Medicine
and was an intern and resident at the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children and
Women in Orlando. After completing her pediatric residency, she
served as pediatric chief resident at Arnold Palmer Hospital. She did
her fellowship training in adolescent medicine at the Montefiore Medical
Center of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. Dr. Barangan
is board certified in general pediatrics and adolescent medicine and is
published in the areas of substance abuse in adolescents and adolescent
interviewing.
Her areas of clinical interest include adolescent outreach
programs, school-based health programs, and self-harm behaviors in
adolescents. She is a member of the Society of Adolescent Medicine and the

A. Sean McKnight, MD, FAAP, Assistant Professor
Dr. McKnight received his medical degree from Ross University School of Medicine. He completed his pediatric residency training in Las Vegas at the University of Nevada School of Medicine. He then completed a fellowship in allergy and immunology at the University of South Florida College of Medicine before returning to Las Vegas.
Dr. McKnight is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, and the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. Ruben J. Acherman, MD, FACC, FAAP, Associate Professor
Dr. Acherman, a native of Colombia, completed his medical degree from Universidad del Valle in Cali, Colombia. He completed his pediatric residency and a neonatology fellowship at Los Angeles County USC Hospital. Dr. Acherman next completed a pediatric cardiology fellowship at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.
Before joining Children’s Heart Center in 2002, Dr. Acherman spent eight years on the faculty of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles where he served as director of fetal cardiology. Dr. Acherman is board certified in both pediatrics and pediatric cardiology.
Kathleen A. Cass, MD, PhD, FACC, FAAP, Assistant Professor
Dr. Cass earned a doctorate in biochemistry from the University of Iowa. She also earned her medical degree from the University of Iowa College of Medicine. She then completed her pediatric residency and pediatric cardiology fellowship at the University of Iowa Hospitals.
Dr. Cass joined Children’s Heart Center in 1983 and sees patients at three southern Nevada offices in addition to all Las Vegas hospitals. She has a special interest in computer applications in the practice of medicine. Dr. Cass is board certified in both pediatrics and pediatric cardiology.
William N. Evans, MD, FACC, FAAP, Associate Professor
Dr. Evans obtained his medical degree from the University of California, Irvine. He completed his internship, residency, and pediatric cardiology fellowship at the Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles. As a long-standing member of the Las Vegas medical community, Dr. Evans has held positions at several area hospitals and served as a board member of numerous charities. He is founder and past president of the Las Vegas Pediatric Society.
In 1980 Dr. Evans established, and continues to serve, as co-director of Children’s Heart Center, Nevada’s largest pediatric cardiology practice. Dr. Evans is board certified in both pediatrics and pediatric cardiology.
Alvaro Galindo, MD, FACC, FAAP, Professor
Dr. Galindo received his medical degree from the University of Miami School of Medicine. He completed his residency at the New England Medical Center in Boston. Dr. Galindo later served as a pediatric cardiology fellow at UCLA. He received additional training in interventional cardiac catheterization at Boston Children’s Hospital.
Dr. Galindo joined Children’s Heart Center in 2006 after serving as associate professor at the University of Miami. He completed his pediatric cardiology fellowship at UCLA and was a post-graduate fellow in interventional cardiology at Boston Children’s Hospital. He patented the double balloon pediatric ductus arteriosis stent catheter.
Katrinka T. Kip, MD, FACC, FAAP, Assistant Professor
Dr. Kip earned her medical degree from the State University of New York. She completed an internship and residency at Tulane University Hospital and a pediatric cardiology fellowship at the University of Miami. Before joining the Children’s Heart Center in 1999, Dr. Kip held the positions of acting division chief and assistant professor of pediatrics at the Medical College of Ohio in Toledo.

Joseph M. Ludwig, MD, Assistant Professor
Dr. Ludwig was awarded his MD from the St. Louis University Medical School. He completed his Pediatric Residency at Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles where he received the Chief Resident’s Award. He continued his training at Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles for his pediatric cardiology fellowship.
He joined the Children’s Heart Center and the School of Medicine faculty in 2005. Dr. Ludwig’s practice is based primarily in Reno, but also sees patients in Las Vegas and performs outreach services in Carson City, Elko and Winnemucca, Nevada.
Carlos F. Luna, MD, FACC, FAAP, Assistant Professor
Dr. Luna received his medical degree from the Universidad del Valle in Cali, Colombia. He completed residency at USC Medical Center. Dr. Luna then served as a pediatric cardiology fellow at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.
Dr. Luna joined Children’s Heart Center in 2003 after a three-year affiliation with the Keck School of Medicine at USC where he was director of the Division of Pediatric Cardiology. Dr. Luna is board certified in both pediatrics and pediatric cardiology and has a special interest in fetal and neonatal cardiology and transesophageal echocardiography.
Gary A. Mayman, MD, FACC, FAAP, Associate Professor
Dr. Mayman received his medical degree from UCLA and completed his residency at UCLA Medical Center. Dr. Mayman later served as a pediatric cardiology fellow at the Cardiovascular Research Institute and University of California San Francisco. He later joined Children’s Heart Center in 1991 after eight years with Kaiser Sunset Hospital in Los Angeles, where he was director of pediatric echocardiography.
Dr. Mayman serves as co-director of Children’s Heart Center. He is board certified in both pediatrics and pediatric cardiology.
Robert C. Rollins, MD, FAAP, Assistant Professor
Dr. Rollins is a native of Las Vegas who graduated with honors from Ross University School of Medicine. He completed his pediatric residency at the University of Nevada School of Medicine. Dr. Rollins completed his fellowship in pediatric cardiology at the Childrens Hospital of Los Angeles.
Upon completing his fellowship in 2006, he moved to Las Vegas to join Children’s Heart Center. Dr. Rollins has an interest in fetal cardiology as well as transesophageal echocardiography.
Abraham Rothman, MD, FACC, FAAP, Professor and Chief, Section on Pediatric Cardiology
Dr. Rothman obtained his medical degree from the University of California San Diego. He completed residency at the University of California San Diego Medical Center. Dr. Rothman served as a pediatric cardiology fellow at the Children’s Hospital in Boston. He joined Children’s Heart Center in 2003 after a 14 years at the University of California San Diego, where he was chief of the Division of Pediatric Cardiology. Dr. Rothman is board certified in both pediatrics and pediatric cardiology. He is a nationally acclaimed pediatric cardiac interventionalist and an extensively published basic science researcher.
Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics
Johanna S. Fricke, MD, FAAP, Associate Professor and Chief, Section on Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics
Dr. Fricke received her medical degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine, where she completed her first two years of residency. She finished her residency training at the University of Texas in San Antonio. Dr. Fricke practiced in Reno for 22 years, both in private practice and for the Nevada State Health Division.
She has practiced developmental and behavioral pediatrics for more than 20 years. Dr. Fricke works in the ambulatory pediatric clinics. Her interests are children with a variety of behavioral and developmental difficulties. Dr. Fricke is board certified in behavioral-developmental pediatrics. Alan M. Rice, MD, Assistant Professor and Chief, Section on Pediatric Endocrinology
Dr. Rice received his medical degree from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. His residency training in pediatrics was at Tulane University in New Orleans, and he completed a fellowship in Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. Before joining the Pediatric Faculty in Las Vegas, Dr. Rice held a faculty position at Duke University. Dr. Rice is Board Certified in Pediatric Endocrinology, a Member, Professional Section, of the American Diabetes Association and a recipient of a National Research Service Award. His areas of research interest include receptor transduction of hormone action and its relevance to endocrine disorders, a topic about which he co-authored a chapter in Pediatric Endocrinology. Dr. Rice was named as one of America’s Top Pediatricians in 2005.
Rola Saad, M.D.
Dr Rola Saad received her MD degree from the American University of Beirut, Beirut, Lebanon.
Her Residency training in Pediatrics was in Syracuse state University, Syracuse, New York. She completed her fellowship in Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Before joining the pediatric faculty in Las Vegas in November 2007, Dr Saad provided primary care for 5 years in underserved areas in Carson City and Pahrump, Nevada.
Dr Saad is board certified in Pediatrics, and board eligible in Pediatric Endocrinology.
Dr Saad is fellow in the American Academy of Pediatrics, and member of Endocrine Society and American Diabetes Association.
Her area of research is Insulin sensitivity, Insulin resistance and PCOS using Insulin Clamps. She has multiple article publications in these topics. She is a coauthor of chapter “Insulin Resistance in youth: definition and methods of measurements” in a book titled Insulin Resistance In Children and Adolescents.

Howard I. Baron, MD, FAAP, Associate Professor
Dr. Baron is a graduate of the University of Minnesota Medical School where he completed his residency in pediatrics. He was also pediatric chief resident there before completing his fellowship in pediatric gastroenterology at UCLA Center for the Health Sciences. Dr. Baron joined Pediatric Gastroenterology andNutrition Associates in 1993. He was involved in medical student and resident education as part of the clinical faculty and was appointed associate professor of pediatrics in 2004.
Dr. Baron is nationally recognized in pediatric gastroenterology and serves on the clinical practice committee of the North American Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition. Carl V. Dezenberg, MD, FAAP, Assistant Professor
Dr. Dezenberg received his medical degree at the University of Alabama School of Medicine. He completed his pediatric residency at the University of California, San Diego and returned to the University of Alabama for fellowship training in pediatric gastroenterology and nutrition.
After completing his training, he moved to Las Vegas in 1997 to join Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition Associates. Dr. Dezenberg is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and member of the North American Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition.
Christopher Rhee, MD, FAAP, Assistant Professor
Dr. Rhee graduated from Finch University of Health Sciences Chicago Medical School. He finished his residency training in pediatrics at Kaiser Permanente in Los Angeles, then stayed in California to complete his pediatric gastroenterology fellowship at UCLA. After fellowship training, he relocated to Las Vegas to join Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition Associates. Scott Denton, MD, Associate Professor
Dr. Denton is a native of Nevada and alumnus of the University of Nevada School of Medicine. Following graduation, he completed a pediatric residency at the University of Arizona and entered private practice in Elko and Henderson in Nevada. He joined the faculty in 1998.
He supervises physician residents on inpatient and outpatient general pediatric services at University Medical Center.
Daniel Heintz, MD, Assistant Professor and Pediatric Medical Student Director
Dr. Heintz earned his medical degree from St. George’s University School of Medicine. He moved to Nevada where he received his residency training in pediatrics and served as pediatric chief resident. He was accepted into the primary care faculty development fellowship at Michigan State University and completed the fellowship in 2006.
Dr. Heintz serves as pediatric clerkship director for third year medical students and works with residents in inpatient and outpatient pediatric services at University Medical Center and Kids' Healthcare.
Renu Jain, MBBS, FAAP, Associate Professor
Dr. Jain graduated from Dayanand Medical College of Punjab University in India before emigrating to the U.S. She completed her pediatric residency at Rush-Presbyterian St. Luke's Medical Center in Chicago and then continued there to work for the Board of Health, University of Chicago, and a large multispecialty health maintenance organization. After an additional 15 years in general pediatric practice in Las Vegas, Dr. Jain joined the faculty.

Wendy King, MD, Assistant Professor
Dr. King obtained a medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. She then completed her residency in general pediatrics at the University of California, Irvine where she was chief resident. She entered private practice with a large multi-specialty medical group in California for three years, where she served as lead physician for her clinic.
Dr. King is a certified lactation consultant and works with students and residents at the Lied Outpatient Pediatric Clinic, Kids' Healthcare Clinic, University Medical Center Inpatient Service, and Sunrise Children’s Hospital Nursery.
Kami Larsen, MD, FAAP, Assistant Professor and Medical Director, Kids Healthcare
Dr. Larsen received her medical degree and completed her pediatric residency training at the University of Nevada School of Medicine before building her pediatric practice in Henderson, Nevada. She has been recognized for excellence in teaching through awards from the American Academy of Family Physicians Active Teacher in Family Medicine Recognition Award and by the Arnold P. Beverly Neyland, MD, FAAP, Professor
Dr. Neyland obtained her medical degree from Meharry Medical College, completed her internship at Long Beach Memorial Children's Hospital and residency at UCLA Harbor General Hospital. She practiced pediatrics in Las Vegas for 20 years before joining the faculty. She has served as chief of pediatrics at University Medical Center and Sunrise Hospital. Dr. Neyland is president of the Nevada chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and is active nationally in the AAP, serving on the membership and 75th anniversary committees.
Dr. Neyland is director of the ambulatory pediatrics curriculum for the residency program and supervises residents at Kids Healthcare, University Medical Center pediatric inpatient unit, Sunrise Children’s Hospital Nursery and Lied Outpatient Pediatric Clinic, where she is director of the Reach Out and Read program. Cynthia Seitz, MD, FAAP, Assistant Professor and Chief, Section on Pediatric Hospital Medicine
Dr. Seitz earned her medical degree and completed her pediatric residency training at the University of Nevada School of Medicine and then served as pediatric chief resident in Las Vegas. She has been recognized for academic excellence through her election to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. Dr. Schenauer is chief of the section on pediatric hospital medicine and serves as medical director of the pediatric inpatient service at University Medical Center.
Lopa Shah, MD, FAAP, Assistant Professor
Dr. Shah joined the faculty in 2003. She came to the School of Medicine from Temple University. Dr. Shah received her medical degree from Baroda Medical College in India, where she also completed one year of internship training. She moved to Flushing Hospital Medical Center in New York for her pediatric residency. Her major areas of interest are general pediatrics, particularly clinical research and publication, but she also teaches a variety of pediatric topics including pediatric dermatology. Dr. Shah supervises residents at Lied Outpatient Pediatric Clinic and the pediatric inpatient service at University Medical Center.
S. Charles Snavely, MD, FAAP, Professor
Dr. Snavely is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and completed his pediatric residency at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. After serving as a general pediatrician at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada, he made Las Vegas his home and is a highly respected general pediatrician for more than 30 years. Dr. Snavely supervises pediatric residents at Kids' Healthcare and directs the continuity clinics. He was named a 2005 Top Doctors in Las Vegas Life.
Kira Molas-Torreblanca, DO, Assistant Professor
Dr. Molas-Torreblanca earned her medical degree at Western University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific and completed her pediatric residency training at the University of Nevada School of Medicine in Las Vegas where she then served as pediatric chief resident.
She recently was recognized for excellence in pediatric medicine as recipient of the Ruben P. Diaz Memorial Scholarship grant. Dr. Molas-Torreblanca supervises residents in the inpatient setting, where she serves as pediatric hospitalist at University Medical Center.
Genetics and Dysmorphology
Colleen A. Morris, MD, FAAP, Professor and Chief, Genetics and Dysmorphology Section
Dr. Morris received her medical degree from Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine, completed a pediatric residency at Phoenix Hospitals affiliated programs and a fellowship in clinical genetics and dsymorphology at the University of Utah. She established the clinical genetics program in Nevada in 1988. She holds a joint appointment in the Department of Pediatrics and Department of Pathology and directs genetic clinics throughout Nevada.
She is a leading authority and extensively published on Williams Syndrome and is co-author of Williams-Beuren Syndrome: Research, Evaluation and Treatment. Dr. Morris is a founding fellow of the American College of Medical Genetics, fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and member of the American Society of Human Genetics. Katrina Farwig, MS, Clinical Instructor
Ms. Farwig received her masters in genetics from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. She is a diplomate of the American Board of Medical Genetics and the American Board of Genetic Counseling and practices as a genetics counselor in the genetics-dysmorphology section.

Holly H. Hobart, PhD, Research Associate Professor
Dr. Hobart earned his doctorate in cytogenetics, genetics, ornithology, and evolutionary biology from the University of Arizona. He complete a postdoctoral fellowship in human cytogenetics at Indiana University Medical School.
He is a diplomate of the American Board of Medical Genetics and a fellow of the American College of Medical Genetics. Dr. Hobart is laboratory director of the Nevada Genetics Laboratories of the University of Nevada School of Medicine. He directs the research laboratory and clinical service laboratory activities.
Kendra Kimberly, DVM , Research Assistant Professor
Dr. Kimberley received her doctorate of veterinary medicine from Iowa State University in 1998. She left veterinary practice in 2001 to join the molecular cytogenetics laboratory at the School of Medicine. She has investigated molecular polymorphisms in human chloride channels and conducts molecular research on Williams syndrome and Kabuki syndrome.

Pisespong Patamasucon, MD, Professor and Chief, Section on Pediatric Infectious Disease
Dr. Patamasucon received his medical degree from Chiangmai University in Thailand and completed a pediatric residency at Children’s Hospital in Bangkok. His certifications include the Thailand Board of Pediatrics as well as the American Board of Pediatrics. He completed a fellowship in pediatric infectious disease at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in Dallas. His special interests lie in the clinical usage of antimicrobial agents. Echezona E. Ezeanolue, MD, MPH, Assistant Professor
Dr. Ezeanolue received his medical degree from the College of Medicine at the University of Nigeria. He completed his pediatric residency at Howard University in Washington, D.C. Following residency training, he completed fellowship training in pediatric infectious diseases at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, where he also completed a masters in public health with an emphasis on disease epidemiology. Dr. Ezeanolue directs the pediatric and adolescent HIV program and currently has a CATCH grant award from the American Academy of Pediatrics.
He is a member of numerous organizations including the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Pediatric Infectious Disease Society and the Infectious Diseases Society of America. His major areas of interest are empiric antibiotics therapy and HIV. He enjoys working with residents to develop their scholarly activities. Pulmonology
David P. Parks, MD, Associate Professor and Chief, Section on Pediatric Pulmonology
Dr. Parks is a graduate of the University of Florida College of Medicine and completed his pediatric residency at the Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, Virginia. After five years as a general pediatrician in the Navy, he completed a pediatric pulmonology fellowship at the University of Iowa.
He then spent five years on the faculty at the University of Colorado and the National Jewish Center for Immunology and Respiratory Medicine. He entered private practice in pediatric pulmonology in Las Vegas in 1994 and joined the University of Nevada School of Medicine faculty in 2002.
