David A. Gremse, MD, FAAP, FACG Professor and Chair
Dr. Gremse has served as Chair of the Department of Pediatrics since 2004. He completed his undergraduate medical education and pediatric residency training at the University of South Alabama in Mobile. He undertook a fellowship in Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition at Children's Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati before returning to Alabama. While serving there as Director of the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition, he was promoted to Professor and became Interim Chair of Pediatrics for his last years there before moving to Las Vegas. He is a strong supporter of residency training and seeks to expand the learning opportunities for residents in Las Vegas.
Jack Lazerson, MD, Program Director
Professor and Chief, Section on Pediatric Hematology
Dr. Lazerson is a graduate of the Chicago Medical School and completed a pediatric residency at Stanford -Palo Alto Hospital. He was chief resident in pediatrics and senior fellow in biochemistry at the University of Washington, Seattle. His area of expertise is in inherited and acquired bleeding disorders and he is a consultant to the State Newborn Screening Program for Sickle Cell Anemia and other Hemoglobinopathies. He directs the Hematology Clinic at University Medical Center and is the Department's Medical Student Clerkship Director.
Adolescent Medicine Section
Caroline Barangan, MD, FAAP, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, Chief, Section on Adolescent Medicine and Associate Program Director for Recruitment
Dr. Barangan received her MD degree from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine
and was an Intern and Resident at the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children &
Women in Orlando, Florida. After completing her Pediatric Residency, she
served as Pediatric Chief Resident at the Arnold Palmer Hospital. She did
her fellowship training in Adolescent Medicine at the Montefiore Medical
Center of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. Dr. Barangan
is Board Certified in General Pediatrics and in Adolescent Medicine and is
published in the areas of Substance Abuse in Adolescents and in Adolescent
Interviewing. Her areas of clinical interest include Adolescent Outreach
Programs, School-Based Health Programs, and self-harm behaviors in
Adolescents. She is a member of the Society of Adolescent Medicine and the
American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Barangan also Chairs the Residency Recruitment Committee and oversees the Academic Advisor/Mentoring Program for the residency.
Allergy-Immunology Section
A. Sean McKnight, MD, FAAP, Assistant Professor
Dr. McKnight received his medical degree from Ross University School of Medicine. He completed his Pediatric Residency training in Las Vegas at the University of Nevada School of Medicine. He then completed a fellowship in Allergy & Immunology at the University of South Florida College of Medicine before returning to Las Vegas. Dr. McKnight is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the AAP, American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, and the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. Dr. McKnight is board certified in both Pediatrics and Allergy & Immunology.
Cardiology Section
Ruben J. Acherman, MD, FACC, FAAP, Associate Professor
Dr. Acherman, a native of Columbia, obtained his MD from the Universidad del Valle in Cali. He completed his Pediatric residency and a Neonatology fellowship at LA County USC Hospital. Dr. Acherman next completed a Pediatric Cardiology fellowship at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada. Before joining the Children’s Heart Center in March 2002, Dr. Acherman spent eight years on the faculty of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles where he served as the Director of Fetal Cardiology. Dr. Acherman is board certified in both Pediatrics and Pediatric Cardiology.
Kathleen A. Cass, MD, PhD, FACC, FAAP, Assistant Professor
Dr. Cass received a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Iowa. She also earned her MD degree from the University of Iowa College of Medicine. She then completed her pediatric residency and Pediatric Cardiology fellowship at the University of Iowa Hospitals. Dr. Cass joined the Children’s Heart Center in July 1983 and sees patients at three Southern Nevada offices in addition to all Las Vegas area hospitals. She has a special interest in computer applications in the practice of medicine. Dr. Cass is board certified in both Pediatrics and Pediatric Cardiology.
William N. Evans, MD, FACC, FAAP, Associate Professor
Dr. Evans obtained his MD from the University of California, Irvine. He then completed his internship, residency, and Pediatric Cardiology fellowship at the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. As a long-standing member of the Las Vegas medical community, Dr. Evans has held positions at several area hospitals and served as a board member of numerous charities. He is the Founder and Past President of the Las Vegas Pediatric Society. In 1980, Dr. Evans established, and continues to serve as Co-Director of, the Children’s Heart Center, Nevada’s largest pediatric cardiology practice. Dr. Evans is board certified in both Pediatrics and Pediatric Cardiology.
Alvaro Galindo, MD, FACC, FAAP, Professor
Dr. Galindo received his MD from the University of Miami School of Medicine. He completed residency at the New England Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts. Dr. Galindo then served as a Pediatric Cardiology Fellow at the University of California at Los Angeles. He received additional training in Interventional Cardiac Catheterization at Boston Children’s Hospital. Dr. Galindo joined Children’s Heart Center in August 2006 after serving as Associate Professor at the University of Miami. He completed his pediatric cardiology fellowship at UCLA and was a post-graduate fellow in interventional cardiology at Boston Children’s Hospital. He patented the Double Balloon Pediatric Ductus Arteriosis Stent Catheter.
Katrinka T. Kip, MD, FACC, FAAP, Assistant Professor
Dr. Kip earned her MD from the State University of New York. She completed an internship and residency at Tulane University Hospital and a Pediatric Cardiology fellowship at the University of Miami. Before joining the Children’s Heart Center in April 1999, Dr. Kip held the positions of Acting Division Chief and Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the Medical College of Ohio in Toledo. Dr. Kip’s practice is based primarily in Reno but she sees patients in Las Vegas and performs outreach services in Carson City, Elko and Winnemucca. Dr. Kip is board certified in both Pediatrics and Pediatric Cardiology.
Joseph M. Ludwig, MD, Assistant Professor
Dr. Ludwig was awarded his MD from the St. Louis University Medical School. He completed his Pediatric Residency at Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles where he received the Chief Resident’s Award. He continued his training at Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles for his Pediatric Cardiology fellowship. He joined the Children’s Heart Center and the UNSOM faculty in 2005. Dr. Ludwig’s practice is based primarily in Reno but also sees patients in Las Vegas and performs outreach services in Carson City, Elko and Winnemucca.
Carlos F. Luna, MD, FACC, FAAP, Assistant Professor
Dr. Luna received his MD from the Universidad del Valle in Cali. He completed residency at LA County USC Medical Center in Los Angeles. Dr. Luna then served as a Pediatric Cardiology Fellow at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Dr. Luna joined the Children’s Heart Center in September 2003 after a three-year affiliation with the Keck School of Medicine at USC where he was the Director of the Division of Pediatric Cardiology at LA County USC Medical Center. Dr. Luna is board certified in both Pediatrics and Pediatric Cardiology and has a special interest in fetal and neonatal cardiology and transesophageal echocardiography.
Gary A. Mayman, MD, FACC, FAAP, Associate Professor
Dr. Mayman received his MD from the University of California, Los Angeles. He completed residency at Harbor UCLA Medical Center in Torrence, California. Dr. Mayman then served as a Pediatric Cardiology Fellow at the Cardiovascular Research Institute and University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Mayman joined the Children’s Heart Center in April 1991 after an eight-year affiliation with Kaiser Sunset Hospital in Los Angeles where he worked as the Director of Pediatric Echocardiography. Dr. Mayman serves as the Co-Director of the Children’s Heart Center. Dr. Mayman is board certified in both Pediatrics and Pediatric Cardiology.
Robert C. Rollins, MD, FAAP, Assistant Professor
Dr. Rollins is a native Las Vegan who graduated with honors from the Ross University School of Medicine. He completed his Pediatric Residency in Las Vegas at the University of Nevada School of Medicine. Dr. Rollins completed his fellowship in Pediatric Cardiology at the Childrens Hospital of Los Angeles. Upon completing his fellowship in August 2006, he moved to Las Vegas to join the Children’s Heart Center. Dr. Rollins has an interest in fetal cardiology as well as transesophageal echocardiography.
Abraham Rothman, MD, FACC, FAAP, Professor and Chief, Section on Pediatric Cardiology
Dr. Rothman obtained his MD from the University of California, San Diego. He completed residency at the University of California San Diego Medical Center. Dr. Rothman then served as a Pediatric Cardiology Fellow at the Children’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. Dr. Rothman joined the Children’s Heart Center in September 2003 after a fourteen-year affiliation with the University of California, San Diego where he was Chief of the Division of Pediatric Cardiology. Dr. Rothman is board certified in both Pediatrics and Pediatric Cardiology. Dr. Rothman is a nationally acclaimed pediatric cardiac interventionalist and an extensively published basic science researcher.
Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics Section
Johanna S. Fricke, MD, FAAP, Associate Professor and Chief, Section on Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics
Dr. Fricke received her MD degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham, Alabama, where she completed her first two years of residency. She finished her residency training at the University of Texas in San Antonio, Texas. Dr. Fricke practiced in Reno, Nevada, for 22 years both privately and for the Nevada State Health Division. Since 1986, she has practiced developmental and behavioral pediatrics. Dr. Fricke works in the ambulatory pediatric clinics. Her interests are children with a variety of behavioral and developmental difficulties. Dr. Fricke is board certified in Behavioral-Developmental Pediatrics. Dr. Fricke was named as one of America’s Top Pediatricians in 2005.
Endocrinology Section
Alan M. Rice, MD, Assistant Professor and Chief, Section on Pediatric Endocrinology
Dr. Rice received his MD degree from the University of Miami in Miami, Florida. His residency training in pediatrics was at Tulane University in New Orleans, and he completed a fellowship in Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. Before joining the Pediatric Faculty in Las Vegas, Dr. Rice held a faculty position at Duke University. Dr. Rice is Board Certified in Pediatric Endocrinology, a Member, Professional Section, of the American Diabetes Association and a recipient of a National Research Service Award. His areas of research interest include receptor transduction of hormone action and its relevance to endocrine disorders, a topic about which he co-authored a chapter in Pediatric Endocrinology. Dr. Rice was named as one of America’s Top Pediatricians in 2005.
Rola Saad, M.D.
Dr Rola Saad received her MD degree from the American University of Beirut, Beirut, Lebanon.
Her Residency training in Pediatrics was in Syracuse state University, Syracuse, New York. She completed her fellowship in Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Before joining the pediatric faculty in Las Vegas in November 2007, Dr Saad provided primary care for 5 years in underserved areas in Carson City and Pahrump, Nevada.
Dr Saad is board certified in Pediatrics, and board eligible in Pediatric Endocrinology.
Dr Saad is fellow in the American Academy of Pediatrics, and member of Endocrine Society and American Diabetes Association.
Her area of research is Insulin sensitivity, Insulin resistance and PCOS using Insulin Clamps. She has multiple article publications in these topics. She is a coauthor of chapter “Insulin Resistance in youth: definition and methods of measurements” in a book titled Insulin Resistance In Children and Adolescents.

He was elected to the Executive Committee of the Section on Gastroenterology/Nutrition of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and serves on the Professional Education and Ethics Committees of the North American Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition. He also chairs the Credentials Committee of the American College of Gastroenterology. Dr. Gremse has received numerous awards including Best Doctors in America, America’s Top Pediatricians, and Who’s Who in America.
Howard I. Baron, MD, FAAP, Associate Professor
Dr. Baron is a graduate of the University of Minnesota Medical School where he completed his residency in pediatrics. He also served as Pediatric Chief Resident there before completing his fellowship in Pediatric Gastroenterology at the UCLA Center for the Health Sciences. Dr. Baron joined Pediatric Gastroenterology andNutrition Associates in 1993. He was heavily involved in medical student and resident education as part of the Clinical Faculty and was appointed Associate Professor of Pediatrics in 2004. Dr. Baron is nationally recognized in Pediatric Gastroenterology and serves on the Clinical Practice Committee of the North American Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition. Dr. Baron was selected by his peers as one of Las Vegas's top doctors in 2006, in Las Vegas Life Magazine. He has been selected by the Pediatric residents for subspecialty teaching awards in 2003, 2004, and 2006. He serves as Chief of Pediatrics at Sunrise Children's Hospital.
Carl V. Dezenberg, MD, FAAP, Assistant Professor
Dr. Dezenberg received his MD degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine. He completed his pediatric residency at the University of California, San Diego and then returned to the University of Alabama for his fellowship in Pediatric Gastroenterology & Nutrition. After completing his training, he moved to Las Vegas in 1997 to join Pediatric Gastroenterology & Nutrition Associates. Dr. Dezenberg is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and a member of the North American Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition.
Christopher Rhee, MD, FAAP, Assistant Professor
Dr. Rhee graduated from Finch University of Health Sciences/Chicago Medical School. He finished his residency training in pediatrics at Kaiser Permanente in Los Angeles, then stayed in Southern California to complete his Pediatric Gastroenterology Fellowship at UCLA. After fellowship, he moved to Las Vegas to join Pediatric Gastroenterology & Nutrition Associates. Dr. Rhee is a member of the North American Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.

Scott Denton, MD, Associate Professor
Dr. Denton is a native Nevadan and an alumnus of the University of Nevada School of Medicine. Following graduation, he completed a Pediatric Residency at the University of Arizona and entered private practice in Elko, Nevada and then Henderson, Nevada. He joined the full-time faculty in 1998. He supervises residents on both the inpatient and outpatient general pediatric services of UMC.
Daniel Heintz, MD, Assistant Professor and Pediatric Medical Student Director
Dr. Heintz earned his medical degree from St. George’s University School of Medicine. He moved to Nevada where he received his residency training in pediatrics and served as Pediatric Chief Resident. He was accepted into the Primary Care Faculty Development Fellowship at Michigan State University and completed the fellowship in 2006. Dr. Heintz serves as the Pediatric Clerkship Director for Third Year Medical Students and works with residents in the Inpatient and Outpatient Pediatric Services at UMC and at Kids' Healthcare.
Renu Jain, MBBS, FAAP, Associate Professor
Dr. Jain graduated from Dayanand Medical College of Punjab University in India before emigrating to the United States. She completed her pediatric residency at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center in Chicago and then remained there to work for the Board of Health, the University of Chicago, and then a large multispecialty HMO. After an additional 15 years in general pediatric practice in Las Vegas, Dr. Jain joined the faculty. Dr. Jain is the Director of the Newborn Medicine curriculum and works primarily as an outpatient physician and preceptor at Kids' Healthcare, where she is also Director of the Reach Out and Read program. Dr. Jain was named as one of 2005’s Top Doctors in Las Vegas Life Magazine.
Wendy King, MD, Assistant Professor
Dr. King obtained an MD from the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio. She then completed her residency in general pediatrics at the University of California, Irvine, where she was also chief resident. She entered private practice with a large multi-specialty medical group in California for three years, where she served as the lead physician for her clinic. Dr. King is a Certified Lactation Consultant and works with students and residents at the Lied Outpatient Pediatric Clinic, Kids' Healthcare Clinic, UMC Inpatient Service, and Sunrise Children’s Hospital Nursery.
Kami Larsen, MD, FAAP, Assistant Professor and Medical Director, Kids Healthcare
Dr. Larsen received her medical degree and completed her pediatric residency training at the University of Nevada School of Medicine before building her Pediatric Practice in Henderson, NV. She has been recognized for excellence in teaching through awards from the American Academy of Family Physicians Active Teacher in Family Medicine Recognition Award and by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation Humanism in Medicine and Excellence in Teaching Award. Dr. Larsen is the medical director at Kids' Healthcare.
Beverly Neyland, MD, FAAP, Professor
Dr. Neyland obtained an MD from Meharry Medical College, completed her internship at Long Beach Memorial Children's Hospital and residency at UCLA-Harbor General Hospital. She practiced pediatrics in Las Vegas for 20 years before joining the full-time faculty. She has served as Chief of Pediatrics at University Medical Center and Sunrise Hospital. Dr. Neyland is the President of the Nevada Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics and is active nationally in the AAP, having served on the Membership and 75th Anniversary Committees. Dr. Neyland is Director of the Ambulatory Pediatrics Curriculum for the residency program and supervises residents at Kids Healthcare, UMC Pediatric Inpatient unit, Sunrise Children’s Hospital Nursery, and at UMC’s Lied Outpatient Pediatric Clinic, where she is director of the Reach Out and Read Program. Dr. Neyland received Honorable Mention recognition as one of 2006’s Top Doctors in Las Vegas Life Magazine.
Cynthia Seitz, MD, FAAP, Assistant Professor and Chief, Section on Pediatric Hospital Medicine
Dr. Seitz earned her medical degree and completed her pediatric residency training at the University of Nevada School of Medicine and then served as Pediatric Chief Resident in Las Vegas. She has been recognized for academic excellence through her election to Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. Dr. Schenauer is the Chief of the Section on Pediatric Hospital Medicine and serves as Medical Director of the Pediatric Inpatient service at University Medical Center.
Lopa Shah, MD, FAAP, Assistant Professor
Dr. Lopa Shah joined the faculty of the Department of Pediatrics in 2003. She came to UNSOM from Temple University in Philadelphia. Dr. Shah received her medical degree from Baroda Medical College in Baroda, India where she also completed one year of internship training. She moved to Flushing Hospital Medical Center, New York for her Pediatric Residency. Her major areas of interest are General pediatrics, particularly clinical research and publication but she also teaches variety of pediatrics topics including pediatric dermatology. Dr. Shah supervises residents at Lied Outpatient Pediatric Clinic and the Pediatric Inpatient Service at University Medical Center.
S. Charles Snavely, MD, FAAP, Professor
Dr. Snavely is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and completed his Pediatric Residency at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. After serving as a general pediatrician at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada, he made Las Vegas his home and has been a well-respected general pediatric practitioner for over 30 years. Dr. Snavely supervises the pediatric residents at Kids' Healthcare adjacent to the Sunrise Hospital campus and directs the continuity clinics there. Dr. Snavely was named as one of 2005’s Top Doctors in Las Vegas Life Magazine.
Kira Molas-Torreblanca, DO, Assistant Professor
Dr. Molas-Torreblanca earned her medical degree at Western University of Health Sciences/College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific and completed her pediatric residency training at the University of Nevada School of Medicine in Las Vegas where she then served as Pediatric Chief Resident. She has recently been recognized for excellence in pediatric medicine by being selected as the recipient of The Ruben P. Diaz Memorial Scholarship grant. Dr. Molas-Torreblanca now supervises residents in the inpatient setting where she serves as a pediatric hospitalist at University Medical Center.
Genetics and Dysmorphology Section
Colleen A. Morris, MD, FAAP, Professor and Chief, Genetics and Dysmorphology Section
Dr. Morris received her MD from Loyola University-Stritch School of Medicine, completed a pediatric residency at Phoenix Hospitals Affiliated Programs and a fellowship Clinical Genetics/Dsymorphology at the University of Utah. She established the clinical genetics program in Nevada in 1988. She holds a joint appointment in the Departments of Pediatrics and Pathology and directs genetic clinics throughout Nevada. She is a leading authority and is extensively published on Williams Syndrome and is Co-Author of the text: Williams-Beuren Syndrome: Research, Evaluation, and Treatment. Dr. Morris is a Founding Fellow of the American College of Medical Genetics, Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and a member of the American Society of Human Genetics. Dr. Morris has been listed as one of America’s Top Doctors since 2000.
Katrina Farwig, MS, Clinical Instructor
Ms. Farwig received her MS in Genetics from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Medical Genetics and the American Board of Genetic Counseling and practices as a genetics counselor in the Genetics-Dysmorphology section.
Kristina Fontana, MA, Clinical Instructor
Ms. Fontana received her MA in Clinical Psychology from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Medical Genetics and the American Board of Genetic Counseling. She practices as a genetics counselor in the Genetics-Dysmorphology section.
Holly H. Hobart, PhD, Research Associate Professor
Dr. Hobart earned his doctorate in Cytogenetics, Genetics, Ornithology, and Evolutionary Biology from the University of Arizona. His was a postdoctoral fellow in Human Cytogenetics at the Indiana University Medical School. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Medical Genetics and is a Fellow in the American College of Medical Genetics. Dr. Hobart is the Laboratory Director of the Nevada Genetics Laboratories of the University of Nevada School of Medicine. He directs the research laboratory and the clinical service laboratory activities.
Kendra Kimberly, DVM , Research Assistant Professor
Dr. Kimberley received her DVM from Iowa State University in 1998. She left veterinary practice in 2001 to join the Molecular Cytogenetics Laboratory at UNSOM. She has investigated molecular polymorphisms in human chloride channels, and conducts molecular research on Williams syndrome and Kabuki syndrome.

Pisespong Patamasucon, MD, Professor and Chief, Section on Pediatric Infectious Disease
Dr. Patamasucon received his MD from Chiangmai University, Chiangmai, Thailand and completed a Pediatric Residency at Children’s Hospital, Bangkok, Thailand. His certifications include the Thailand Board of Pediatrics as well as the American Board of Pediatrics. He completed a fellowship in Pediatric Infectious Disease at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center at Dallas, Dallas, Texas. His special interests lie in the Clinical Usage of Antimicrobial Agents.
Echezona E. Ezeanolue, MD, MPH, Assistant Professor
Dr. Ezeanolue received his M.D. degree from the College of Medicine, University of Nigeria. He completed his Pediatric Residency at Howard University in Washington, D.C. Following his Residency training, he completed fellowship training in Pediatric Infectious Diseases at the University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey where he also obtained an MPH degree with emphasis on disease epidemiology. Dr Ezeanolue directs the Pediatric & Adolescent HIV program and currently has a CATCH Grant Award from the American Academy of Pediatrics. He is a member of numerous organizations including the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Pediatric Infectious Disease Society and the Infectious Diseases Society of America. His major areas of interest are empiric antibiotics therapy and HIV. He enjoys working with residents to develop their scholarly activities.

David P. Parks, MD, Associate Professor and Chief, Section on Pediatric Pulmonology
Dr. Parks is a graduate of the University of Florida College of Medicine and completed his Pediatric Residency at the Navel Hospital, Portsmouth, VA. After 5 years as a general pediatrician in the Navy, he completed a Pediatric Pulmonology fellowship at the University of Iowa. He then spent 5 years on the faculty at the University of Colorado and the National Jewish Center for Immunology and Respiratory Medicine. He entered private practice in Pediatric Pulmonology in Las Vegas in 1994 and joined the University of Nevada School of Medicine faculty in 2002. He sees inpatient consultations at all the major hospitals in the Las Vegas area. His Pediatric Pulmonary Outpatient Clinic is at Kids Healthcare.
