DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHIATRY LAS VEGAS: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q. Do you accept foreign medical graduates?
A. We accept both U.S. and foreign medical graduate applications. Greatest emphasis is placed on:
1. Academic achievement,
2. Ability to relate to patients,
3. A good fit with existing residents, faculty, and our environment, and
4. Ability to use English language in written and oral communication.

Q. Do you have a USMLE score requirement?
A. No. We prefer scores of 79 or higher. Each step must be passed within three attempts.

Q. Do you sponsor visas?
A. We do not currently sponsor any visas.

Q. Does it matter how long since I have graduated from medical school?
A. No more than five years can have elapsed since medical school graduation or last ACGME-approved residency training, unless the individual has an active unrestricted license to practice medicine in the U.S.

Q. Is there a clinical experience prerequisite?
A. Although past direct patient care experience is desirable, more importance is placed on interest in and commitment to the field of psychiatry.

Q. How important is English proficiency?
A. Since relationships are very important in psychiatry, English proficiency is exceedingly important.

Q. Is the program university or community based?
A. Our program is a university sponsored community-based, medical school and residency training program. Seminars and administration are conducted from the University of Nevada School of Medicine. Training occurs primarily at four community training sites.
