DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHIATRY LAS VEGAS: PHILOSOPHY and GOALS

Our psychiatric residency program at the University of Nevada School of Medicine is dedicated to providing balanced training in both psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy. Training is also balanced in that it occurs in both public and private settings. We believe that psychiatrists of the future need to be physicians of the mind. As a result, our curriculum focuses not only on neurobiological factors, but also past and present psychosocial factors contributing to the way individuals feel, think and act.

An effort is made to integrate these areas. As much as accreditation requirements allow, training experiences are tailored to the individual needs of residents.

We seek applicants who have the capacity to sit with patients experiencing physical and emotional pain, realizing that listening is a powerful healing factor.

We are interested in individuals who are psychologically minded and interested in their own personal growth. We know that someone having these attributes will delight in understanding the personal psychology of their patients.

Over the four years of training our residents are exposed to an excellent mixture of patients of all socio-economic and cultural backgrounds and a wide variety of psychiatric illness. Under individual supervision, residents are given increasing responsibility as they develop professionally. Our program attempts to foster a mutually supportive resident team. The faculty attempts to listen closely to resident feedback about their personal and professional development. There is also emphasis on using resident feedback to improve the training program. Throughout training, at least a half-day each week is designated for lectures, seminars, case conferences, grand rounds, journal clubs, and an all-resident support group. Lectures and seminars are strategically scheduled to relate to rotations and levels of professional development.

Individual and group supervision regarding patient management occurs several hours weekly.
