PERSONAL COMMENTS

Statement of Teaching Philosophy

As a faculty member in the College of Medicine, one is asked to teach at several levels.

The instructor must teach medical students, residents in training, nurses and other allied health professionals. Although a teacher must be able to modify his subject matter for various groups, there are certain basic principles to which he must adhere.

First and foremost, the material must be presented in an interesting format. The student must be stimulated to learn. The material must be presented in a format which arouses interest and stimulates questions. The medium and mode of presentation is the key.

Students must be allowed to question and challenge concepts. Education should not solely entail memorizing a set number of facts with regurgitation of those facts at a later date. Education must involve a thinking process with stimulation of new ideas. There are basic facts on which to build models, but the student must be stimulated to use this thinking process to his advantage. Exchange of ideas through communication is also an integral component of effective teaching. The effective teacher must be able to communicate ideas through effective models. If students don't understand the principles, then the information has not been communicated well.

As a teacher I am often the recipient of new ideas through communication and dialogue with my students. This interchange must remain fresh and active. This dialogue stimulates the instructor to explore new ideas in a specific field. I must also be aware of specific needs for each student which may be difficult when classes are large. It is important to identify students who are shy and don't actively participate in discussions because they may require individual attention.

Finally, a teacher must be credible and honest. This characteristic is not easily taught to others. By approaching ones work with academic honesty, one may lead by example, thereby stimulating others to follow.
