PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Dr. Fiore had a varied experience as a physician before coming to the University of Nevada. After he completed his "Transitional Internship" in NYC he took a position as a full-time emergency department physician in a busy hospital in upstate New York. After working there for approximately a year and a half he decided to take a break and fulfill his lifelong dream of an extended trip to Asia. He financed this trip by working on the island of Saipan for three months and then traveled throughout southeast Asia for the next six months. One of the most rewarding aspects of his travels was arranging an informal "school" where he taught rural medics in the Mon controlled region of Burma.

Upon returning to upstate New York, Dr. Fiore resumed his Emergency Medicine practice part-time and also worked in a local, very rural, general practice office. Although he loved what he was doing, he felt it was imperative to complete a residency, and thus he traveled to Redding, CA for two years of family medicine training. After residency Dr. Fiore worked for three months in a rural clinic on the rainy side of the Big Island of Hawaii and then spent six months as the doc at a Sierra ski resort.

Following his stint at the ski area, Dr. Fiore was ready for a "real job" and still feels he was very fortunate to join the faculty of the University of Nevada, Reno, Family and Community Medicine in 1992. In addition to teaching students and residents in the Family Medicine Center and during hospital round, Dr. Fiore also teaches the first and second year courses Introduction to Patient Care and Community Medicine. He also directs the sports and occupational medicine rotation for the Family Medicine residents and the primary care sports medicine elective for fourth year medical students. Dr. Fiore has been heavily invested in the issue of professionalism in medicine; he helped initiate the University of Nevada School of Medicine Honor Code and Honor Committee (which he co-chairs) as well as the Professional Development Committee (which he also co-chairs).

His interest in furthering professionalism in medicine has led Dr. Fiore to be involved in the medical staff at the primary affiliated hospital (Washoe Medical Center, now Renown Regional Medical Center). After four years as vice-chief and then Chief of Family Medicine Dr. Fiore was elected to the Vice Cheif of Staff position in 2004 and in 2006 Dr. Fiore was elected as the Chief of Staff at Renown Medical Center for a two year term.

Dr. Fiore's research and publication focus has been primarily related to sports and wilderness medicine, as well as teaching related issues. Selected publications and presentations.

Dr. Fiore continues to look forward to the joys and challenges of working with motivated faculty, students and residents to continually revise and update the residency curriculum and to stimulate residents and students to become life-long learners who share his joy of being a physician.

PERSONAL

David Fiore was born in New York State where he spent the first 18 years of his life. He left the Empire State for Charlottesville, Virginia to attend college and then medical school. In addition to his studies, he took up boxing, twice qualifying for the national finals tournament. While in Redding he met Dina, whom he convinced to marry him after only seven years. They now have three wonderful boys, Darius, Treyson and Bridger. Dr. Fiore's passions outside of work include his wonderful family and skiing. Most of the time Dr. Fiore is out in the back country on his telemark gear, but he has been spotted riding the lifts with his family and when the conditions are right.

Dr. Fiore also coordinates the Wilderness Medicine ElectiveWilderness Medicine Elective for fourth year medical students.
