Professional Experience

After graduating with her master's degree and finishing her internship in Los Angeles, Barbara Scott began her career in nutrition at the upper end of the age spectrum. She got more education in gerontology and worked to establish and administer a network of nutrition programs for senior citizens throughout Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties on the central California coast.

She then moved to Seattle to directe her attention to the "younger set", completing a fellowship in adolescent nutrition and interdisciplinary health care. This helped to qualify her for a job in Maternal and Child Health at the State Health Division in Carson City, Nevada.

After serving for several years as the director of the Nevada Special Supplemental Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC), she took a job at the University of Nevada School of Medicine where she has been for the past 18 years.

Her career in the Medical School has been quite varied. She has provided direct patient care to children with special health care needs and children in the Early Head Start Program, to persons with HIV/AIDS, and to adults with a variety of nutrition concerns such as weight management, hypertension, food allergies, and prenatal nutrition.

She has many scientific publications, has made numerous professional presentations, and has worked on a variety of research projects ranging from the effect of weight cycling on health to the nutrition practices of elite power lifters. She has had to opportunity to help teach nutrition to medical students and residents and to serve on many university committees and the faculty senate. Special interests include vegetarianism, nutrition and immunity, working with parents and child care providers to help children learn healthy eating habits, and combining complementary therapies such as Ayurvedic and herbal medicine with tradition western medical nutrition therapy.

Barbara has been active in the American Dietetic Association serving as a journal reviewer and as a founder and chair of the Hunger and Environmental Nutrition Dietetic Practice Group and active committee member in the HIV/AIDS Dietetic Practice Group.

She has served two terms on the board of the Nevada Dietetic Association, and was selected as the outstanding dietitian of the year in 1996.

Personal

Barbara lives in Washoe Valley, Nevada with her two horses, three dogs, and two cats.

She enjoys horseback riding in the mountains and on the beach, swimming in Lake Tahoe in the summer, cross-country skiing and snow shoeing in the winter, hiking with her dogs, and gardening.

She is a member of the Reno Blues Society and goes to hear live music whenever she can.

She has been a vegetarian for over 20 years because she believes that is the healthiest diet for the environment and for people.

She believes that peace and an end to hunger and poverty on the planet are both possible. Therefore, she is an active member of several local and national anti-hunger and peace advocacy organizations.
