Peterson and Hardin have put together a loose ring back reference book called Children in Distress which guides the reader in screening children's art productions . Two screening instruments are included which tabulate all the art indicators a provider should look for in scoring a child's drawing of the human figure or the kinetic family. The emphasis is on quantitative evaluation culminating in a score that is normal, borderline or suspicious refer. The authors both work in forensic settings that accept this interpretation of child art when testifying in court or providing child advocacy. Hardins' research with 842 children provides validation to the system. The volume is heavily weighted to child victims of sexual and physical abuse, but also includes child responses to bereavement, divorce and family distress. A central feature of the book is the admonition to collect drawings over time as indicators of a patient's stress and healing.
