Child/Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship
Program Mission
The goal of the Child and Adolescent Fellowship is to improve mental health services to children in Nevada by training a new cohort of child and adolescent psychiatrists. Entrants to this program will possess the following attributes: leadership qualities; initiative; skill in forming meaningful attachments with children and families; introspection and self-awareness; altruisism; energy; creativity, and playfulness. Graduates of this program will possess the following skills: ability to assess children in a multi-dimensional fashion incorporating elements from the biological, developmental, psychological, social/family and community realms; knowledge of the major treatment modalities including both psychopharmacology as well as all the psychosocial therapeutic treatments that are helpful to children, and finally the ability to function as a consultant within multiple spheres which affect the lives and development of children, such as schools, juvenile justice programs, social services and primary health care. Additionally, graduates of this program will have been exposed to research techniques and methodology to enhance their interest in child and adolescent psychiatric research, and they will have gained some experience in the activities essential to administration of mental health programs for children and adolescents.
Global competency objectives for the Fellowship include:
1. Care of Children and Adolescents: Early identification of psychiatric diagnoses, differential diagnoses, and full range of biopsychosocial treatment methods.
2. Understanding and Appreciation: Theories and systems of thought regarding the wide range of normal and abnormal responses to biological, psychological and social stresses in health and illness.
3. Interpersonal and Communication: Collaborating with colleagues in other disciplines and specialties in community and institutional settings, as well as family members in the coordinated care of children and adolescents.
4. Awareness and Critical Thinking: Role individual, family, and social systems in prevention of disorders of childhood and adolescence.
5. Scientific Base: Understanding and development of scientific basis of evidence-base practice and research in child and adolescent psychiatry.
6. Ethics: Comprehensive understanding of ethical principles and issues underlying clinical practice and research with children and adolescents.
7. Independent Learning: Development of attitude and skills to continue life-long learning in the discipline.
