Psychiatry Residency Program

University of Nevada School of Medicine Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences sponsors a fully accredited psychiatry program, which was established in 1993. We are proud of the diversity of our residents and high percentage of graduates who have passed the examinations of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. We are even more proud of the maturity, compassion and humanism of our faculty and residents.

Our residents experience progressive, supervised clinical responsibilities at four teaching facilities in Reno. Optional sites in Reno and Las Vegas are utilized for electives during the PGY-4 year. Residents learn psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, inter-disciplinary team management, pharmacotherapy, and psychotherapy in acute inpatient and long-term outpatient settings. Residents treat an appropriate mix of public and private patients. Opportunities for medical student teaching at the training sites and during didactic sessions are available. Research and publication by residents are encouraged but not required for program completion.

Residents are prepared for general psychiatric careers. Many of our residents have been accepted into sub-specialty programs.
