320 Phonetics 3 credits
- Practical course in the science of speech sounds with emphasis on transcription of the International Phonetic Alphabet.
330 Communication Science 3 credits
- Anatomical, neurological, and the physiological bases of speech/voice production.
340 Speech and Language Development 3 credits
- Traditional and psycholinguistic approaches to language and speech development in the individual.
345 Seminar in Clinical Procedure 3 credits
- Advanced study in and observation in specialized areas of the field. Maximum of 8 credits. Prerequisite: SPA 301, 320, 340.
362 Introduction to Audiology 3 credits
- Physics of sound, anatomy and physiology of the ear, medical and surgical aspects of hearing loss, basic audiometric techniques, and hearing conservation.
364 Articulation Disorders 3 credits
- Etiology, assessment and treatment of articulation and phonological disorders. Prerequisites: SPA 301, 320, 340. Prerequisite or co-requisite: 330.
365 Advanced Audiological Testing 3 credits
- Calibration of test equipment. Rationale and procedures used in the evaluation of hearing loss. Laboratory exercises. Prerequisite: SPA 362.
370 Methods of Clinical Management 3 credits
- Therapy and clinical management of problems of disordered speech and language.
Includes clinical equipment and materials for use in public school and medical-setting management programs. Prerequisite: SPA 301, 320, 330, 340, 364. Prerequisite or Co-requisite: 345.
400 Assessment of Communication Disorders 1 to 3 credits
- Appraisal and diagnosis of speech and language disorders with an emphasis on the infant/toddler, preschool, and school-aged populations. Prerequisite: SPA 301, 320, 330, 340, 364. Prerequisite or Co-requisite: SPA 345.
421 Communication Problems of the Aged 3 credits
- Speech, language and hearing problems in the aged, normal aging and acquired disorders.
460, 660 Aspects of Speech Pathology and Audiology 1 credit
- Application of normal psycholinguistic processes to the study of speech and language disorders.
461, 661 Advanced Speech Pathology 2 credits
- Diagnosis and treatment of speech disorders with special emphasis on organic speech disorders and phonology.
463, 663 Internship in Speech Pathology and Audiology 6 or 8 credits
- Clinical experience in the diagnosis and management of children and adults with speech language, or hearing disorders. Experience to be gained in an off-campus rehabilitation program.
464, 664 Practicum in Audiological Testing 1 or 2 credits
- Supervised clinical procedures in descriptive diagnostic hearing examinations. May be repeated. Prerequisite: SPA 362, 365.
SPA 466 Rehabilitation for Hearing Handicapped 3 credits
- Use of amplification, auditory training and speech reading principles.
Prerequisite: SPA 362, 365.
467 Communication and Language Disorders in Children 3 credits
- Nature of communication/language disorders in children with special needs. Non-standardized methods of language assessment. Methods of language intervention with preschool children. Prerequisite: SPA 340; SPA 400 or concurrent enrollments. (Major capstone course)
491 Extended Classroom Experience in Speech Pathology 1 or 2 credits
- Prior course knowledge reinforced and extended through subsequent course offerings. Develop teaching and peer tutoring skills by assisting in classroom activities. Prerequisite: Completion with a grade of B or better, of the course in which extended experience is desired. Enrollment by instructor permission only.
494 Workshops and Institutes 1 to 3 credits
- Intensive study of special topics in speech pathology and audiology. Maximum of 6 credits.
495 Independent Study 1 to 3 credits
- Intensive study of special topics in speech pathology and audiology on an individual basis. Maximum of 6 credits.
AM 145 Sign Language I (American Sign Language) 4 credits
- Development of signing and finger spelling skills to provide knowledge of basic signs used today.
AM 146 Sign Language II (American Sign Language) 4 credits
- Using the sign language skills learned in AM 145, students will broaden their vocabulary and communication skills using sign language. Prerequisite: AM145
